Anthallid (an-thal-id)

The Anthallid are a race of bipedal hivemind insectoids that inhabit The Hollow.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Anthallid are covered in thick chitin that protects them from the elements and attacks. Their hand ends in 3 digits and sharp claws useful for digging. The feet of an Anthallid ends in a two point clawed apendage.   All anthallid have a tail with a retractable stinger on the end of it. The stinger is the size of a dagger and injects potent venom.   Anthallids have wings on their bakcs. It has been said that the flight speed of an anthallid can match that of an aarakocra or dragonkin.

Genetics and Reproduction

Antallid are egg laying. A hive will select a few brood mothers who may lay up to 20 eggs at a time. An anthallid egg usually takes 2-4 months to hatch.

Growth Rate & Stages

An anthallid hatchling is small, usually only being about 1 ft tall and 20 lbs. A hatchling grows into an adult after 3 years

Ecology and Habitats

Anthallid thrive in warm parts of The Hollow due to their ectothermic nature. They have low tolerance to tempratures of 40 degrees or below. Other than this, they are very resiliant and can live in dry or wet climates easily.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Anthallid are omnivorus. They primarily eat small mammals and herbivorus dinosaurs.   Cuoriously, the anthallid seem mostly unaffected by the side effects of keldary. As such, keldery is often sought after by anthallid.

Additional Information

Average Intelligence

The anthallid use a collective conciousness to communicate and thrive in the harsh conditions of The Hollow. The exact way the anthallid hivemind works is unknown, but scientists and scholars belive individual anthallid "link" neurologicly to their brood mother upon conception. The brood mother herself is connected to a larger hive, allowing each individual to always know the whereabouts, thoughts, and actions of other members of a hive.   As long as an anthallid is connected to a hive, it essentially has no individuality. The anthallid is the hive, and the hive is the anthallid.   Should an anthallid stray away from it's brood mother it may loose it's connection to the hive itself. Usually, when this happens disconnected individual quickly goes insane and becomes highly suicidal. Though there have been a few exeptions in which an anthallid who were disconnected lived on the surface on their own.   It is unknown if a non anthallid creature can be integrated into a hive.       Anthallid communicate primarily through the hive, so verbal communication is unneccesary. Because of this, they have no vocal cords. However, they can use a tendril that comes out of thier wrists to manipulate the bodies of a non living creature and use the body as a means of communicating with other species. A less gruesome way they may communicate with other species is through writin

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The head of an Anthallid has a mantis like apearance. Sensory stalks jut out of it's head and have a horn like appearance. These stalks are prehensile despite their rigid appearance.

Civilization and Culture

Average Technological Level

The anthallid have an odd combination of technologies. They have an advanced understanding of medicine and construction, but often use primitive methods to achieve their goals.   Their weapons are primarily based around stone, with many warriors being equipped with obsidian blades and armor made from bones.

History

Prior to the arrival of the drow, the anthallid all but dominated The Hollow. The only major rivals they had were the fire newts and now extinct Rukkari. After the drow arrived, the dynamic changed and the two species became locked in a perennial struggle for dominance.   During the Second Draconic Crusade a army of anthallid followed an army of fire newts to the surface in hopes of defeating theri old enemy. Instead, they found a hostile land in a state of total war. The anthallid got caught up in the crusade and fought the Imperium viscously. Over time, their losses were too heavy and the hives agreed to pull back into The Hollow.   Several thousand years later, another fissure opened up. When scouts made it to the surface they were met by humans armed with strange weapons. An anthallid scout begun negotiations by etching "what are you and what are you carrying?" in the dirt with it's foot. From there, an agreement between the humans and anthallid was reached: a perimiter would be set up around this new fissure so that the hives could experiment with surface flora and fauna, and in return human scouts could enter the fissure to better map The Hollow.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

The anthallid are often maligned by other species for their apearance and alien like biology. However, the vast majority of hives have a reverence for life and wish to live in peace. However, it has been said that once a hive is crossed, it will never forget or forgive and will do whatever it takes to punish those who wronged it.

Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
A wide array of colors have been observed in the chitin of anthallid. The most common is brown, grey, blue, and orange. The colors usually depend of envornmental factors as well as the brood mother herself.
