Steelsilk

Steelsilk is a vital textile created and used by the Drow of the Silk Chasm. It comes from a special breed of giant spider known as Golden Azzaru. It has many applications but is primarily used in the construction and expansion of their city. Due to the incredible strength to density ratio of it, it is comparable to steel in its overall strength and toughness. It is woven into thick strands that are fashioned into both platforms and cables to suspend the structures and create bridges across the chasm. Due to the obvious vulnerabilities to fire and cutting, the Drow weave in threads of other metals and minerals that produce a silk that is strong, fire-proof, and resistant to most forms of cutting.

Steelsilk is a major export from the Drow of the Silk Chasm, fetching high prices in neighboring cities. It can be used to make garments and due to its unique properties it can serve as a form of armor, though it is only effective against certain weapons.

Material Characteristics

Steelsilk is a lustrous gold that shimmers in certain lights. When used in construction it is duller due to the blend of materials that goes into its making. When used for clothing or tapestries, it is lightweight, soft, breathable, and above all, strong while still allowing for ease of movement due to its natural tensile strength.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Steelsilk is incredibly strong and has high tensile strength that prevents it from breaking under stress. Though vulnerable to cutting and fire, the Drow have developed a method of reducing these weaknesses to keep their city operating safely.
When turned into a textile for garment making, steelsilk is flexible, lightweight, and virtually puncture proof.
