Horil

Horil is a language, categorised either as an isolate, or in the controversial Terrid family, spoken by horils since ancient times. First attested from about 3200 BCA in a logo-syllabic script known as "linear Horil". It was written in this form throughout the bronze age as Archaic and later Old Horil. Middle Horil diverges from Old Horil around 900 BCA, in a new alphabetic script following a severe drought of inscriptions following the Late Bronze Age Collapse. Middle Horil, being written in the Old Horil Alphabet, did not have letters to repesent vowel sounds—a drastic departure from the logo-syllabary used previously, and one that drastically reduced the length of transcriptions. Middle Horil is often transcribed in the Vallaran alphabet for ease of reading. Beginning with Middle Horil, the language became less conservative, and changed rapidly relative to how slowly it changed during the bronze age, likely as a consequence of an increase in literacy.   Modern Horil exists in two parallel dialects: Hag, which is a more conservative prestige dialect, and Trokj, which is a more informal, colloquial form of the language. Hag was the primary form of Horil following its evolution from Late Horil around 1400 CA, and Trokj began to diverge around 2000.   Modern Horil is written in the Vallaran alphabet in the east and Dvekmenu in the west.
