Yttria

Geography

Yttria contains two main ecosystems - the Waste, a barren desert, and the mountain range once known as Yttrum's Leg and now called the Ghoulspine. The western half of the Waste is mostly sand dunes, eventually bleeding into the bright grasslands of Arnor. The eastern half is rocky flatland that follows the foothills of the Ghoulspine until reaching Laoja. The Waste is divided by the Ghoulspine, which cuts south from the capital city, also called Yttria, before veering east towards Laoja. Its southern border is blocked on the west by the Alvade Mountains and on the east by the Sea of Breezes. Its northern border faces the tundra continent of Baiyotes across the Cyclone Sea and the Red Gulf. The capital city and the head of the Ghoulspine are both located on a peninsula that is within sight of the coast of Baiyotes.

History

Before the Arrival, Yttria was known as Gataron. There were no mountain ranges, and the area was characterized by sandy desert spotted with oases. Despite the harsh environment, semi-permanent settlements were common throughout Gataron, especially on the coasts. It was famous for its trading caravans and bazaars.   After the Arrival, Yttrum raised the mountains later called Yttrum's Leg while walking to Laoja to aid his brother Azali. This mountain range divided Yttria into two halves and became the primary population center for humans. Yttrum's influence also restricted the passage of water to the surface, drying up oases and resulting in a mostly subterranean ecosystem that left little trace above.   Unlike most of the gods, Yttrum took a personal hand in shaping the natural environment of Yttria while giving human society relatively free reign. This included raising "children" that, while not true gods, would grow to rival Yttrum in power. The most infamous of these was Azeog, Father of Ghouls and Lord of Sand.   Centuries after the Arrival, the Betrayal of Azeog was a turning point in the history of Gelinia. Azeog and some of his siblings attacked Yttria with an army of ghouls, sparking a civil war that would leave the country in ruins. By the end, Yttria was in shambles, and mostly inhospitable to human civilization. The rest of Gelinia took to calling it the Waste.
