Daramathian Species in Gedau Solaris | World Anvil

Daramathian

The Daramathians are a divergent evolution of Katharians.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Daramathian anatomy is nearly identical to that of a Katharian. Though they have a much more robust bone structure and thick blubber, as well as having only two pressure regulation organs. This article will only describe the Daramathians in how they are distinct from a regular Katharian.

Ecology and Habitats

Daramathians evolved to an enviroment of cold, extreme pressure and extreme salinity. Unlike their ancestors they have lost the ability to breathe air and while they can adapt to a range of high pressures, they do not have a capacity to adapt to an atmospheric pressure that would be considered normal to most species. Hence when entering a 'nominal' environment they must wear an advanced pressure suit to maintain their native environment.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Daramathians eat organisms native to their homeworld and colonies. Various exotic deep sea extremophiles resembling tube worms which typically thrive around hydrothermal vents.

Additional Information

Average Intelligence

Daramathians are notably smarter, more creative, and more intelligent than their Katharian ancestors. They are slightly above human intelligence. Both males and females are emotionally intelligent, but also are psychologically disposed to caution and rational thinking.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Daramathians have excellent eyesight even in pitch darkness. Through genetic augmentation they have modified their eyes to contain luminescent symbiotic organisms that project light out away from the light sensitive cells in their eyes. This in essence makes the eye like a flashlight and allows them the benefit of sight even though their native habitat is deep underwater.

Civilization and Culture

Major Organizations

Colonial Faction - The dominant daramathian political group. They believed the daramathians should colonize other worlds, and carefully govern their interactions with other species, but should not be militant towards them.   Reclaimer Faction - The second-most-dominant daramathian political school. They believe that they are the true 'Katharians' and that there should be a militant takeover of the original Katharian system.   Isolationist Faction - A political group that believes the Daramathians should remain isolated on a single planet, and should have no ties with other species. In modern times the isolationists settle for "Let's not draw attention to ourselves or colonize any more planets."

Average Technological Level

Daramathians are most notable for their discovery of quantum thread technology.   They had a better understanding of genetic engineering than their katharian ancestors did at any parallel time in history, with a strong ability to terraform icy bodies to have subsurface oceans warmed by fusion reactors tied to heat sinks in the ocean. They also discovered subspace travel.

History

Pre-Space Era

Tai'kixa Daramathis was a traitor to the Katharian oligarchy and the leader of a colony group which fled the Katharians home star system after a rebellion. Disgusted with what the Katharian people were becoming she and her rebels singed a pact in which they could peacefully leave aboard colony ship. One of her chief subordinates was a researcher who claimed the oligarchy was close to cracking the problem of superluminal travel and that they could not escape their own people from simply hunting down their splinter faction later.   Tai'kixa resolved to chart course for a rouge planet in interstellar space. The planet, later named Daramath in her honor was an icy world around twice the size of the Katharian homeworld whos core was kept warm by tidal heating. The Daramathians would proceed to settle there, hiding deep under the ice. Their society resolved to remain hidden until they were either discovered or received signals from outside that they felt an outside civilization would not be of harm to them.

Space Conflict Era

Daramathian society stayed confined to one planet during this time. They would extensively genetically engineer themselves to better suit their new homeworld, taking on their new appearance. Without the restrictions of Takabar they built a more enlightened and free society with less wealth inequality, more empirical scientific and technological development, and liberal freedom to pursue happiness. Culture flourished, with art, music, literature and culinary arts all growing.   Though it was not without strife, as several groups such as the reclamation faction (who wanted to build a military force to retake the original home system) and the colonization faction (who wanted to find and colonize other hidden icy worlds with subsurface oceans). Their government made use of secret police to enforce a strict policy of isolation and their own propoganda, which, unlike that of their parent species, contained at least a grain of truth. That their parent species were tyrants who had perverted the true Katharian people.   The society also had to enforce strict birth control. If the Daramathian society grew too large and used too much energy, the planet's surface ice could melt. This problem was eventually solved when the colonial faction took power, and the Daramathians disocvered the means to manufacture quantum threaded communications. This allowed them instant communication across any distance.   With this they began a campaign to secretly colonize icy bodies with subsurface oceans while maintaining a coherent secret society. Believing that the best security was obscurity and that by not preverbially having all eggs in one basket, they were safer.

Dominion Era

The Daramathian people would be discovered by Kragleosha Gauss around the time the dominion was founded. They offered to share their quantum threading technology as a gesture of good grace with the galaxy and a sign that their people wanted peace.

Historical Figures

The progenitor of the species. Ta'kixa led the colony fleet that founded the daramathian colony.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Daramathians harbor a degree of grudging disdain for their ancestor species; particularly traditionalists who originally drove them from their home. They are, in interspecies social interaction often described as "shy and reserved, but friendly". They have limited interaction with most other species due to the environmental barrier.
