The representation of life, the spirit in any living thing, every living being has it, and when separated from it, a living being will generally die. However, when a living being dies, their spirit lives on, eventually dissipating into the air. But before then they live on as spirits, or ghosts. 
A small amount of spirit is always present in the air naturally, but when a large amount of death, be it plant, animal, or human, occurs, the influx of magic can merge together forming a spirit as well, these are often called tragedy spirits.
spirits can anchor themselves to objects and living beings, this allows them to subsist for much longer periods of time, feeding off the background spirit in the air or the spirit of a living being.
