Kasula Neristina

Kasula was thirteen years old when she began work as a cook's assistant aboard a trading vessel in the Drembari isles. The ship's doctor, Farlow, was appalled to see such a young child working in the brutal conditions of the ship, and took her under his wing. An officer and experienced sailor, Farlow recognized raw sailing talent in Kasula and began to pass on his knowledge of sailing and the stars     She spent the free hours of her evenings atop the ship's crows nest, charting the stars. One night high in the crow's nest, she felt a chill behind her, and upon turning around, found herself enveloped in thick black fog. An unseen force pummelled her in the gut, throwing her some 200 yards out to see before she came crashing down onto the surface of the water. Both arms and legs were broken upon impact of the surface, and she was helpless as she sank slowly to the ocean floor, unable to move.       Her ability to breath underwater seemed a cruel gift under the circumstances. She eventually felt the ocean floor on her back. There was nothing she could do, save wait to die in the pitch black darkness. Hours upon heartbreaking hours passed. Hope faded to courage, courage faded to fear, and fear faded to a deep and bottomless sadness. She was not afraid of dying, but could not rid herself of the unshakeable sadness of knowing that she would never again see the sun rise over the Drembari horizon.       A faint glow began to emit from the sea bed. She could still turn her head and saw that she was on the barren ocean floor. It was barren, or was, until a colorful rainbow carpet of plants, corals, and sea-life began to emerge from the ground, slowly at first, but stretching out as far as she could see. Soon she was enveloped in a teeming ecosystem of life and colors. Creatures like she had never seen before began to swim around her, seemingly cleaning or kissing her aching wounds. She suddenly felt that she could move normally again and could see a faint light in the direction of the surface. She kicked off the ground to swim back up, and when looking back to the bottom, saw that the sea was again barren and featureless.       Kasula floated for a day or two before seeing an island in the distance. She came ashore to find herself completely alone, save the numerous tropical creatures. It was there that she discovered a new power inside of herself. At first she did not know what was happening; a baby bird with a broken wing became well again after holding it in her hands; a mortally wounded warthog's flesh mended itself together with her touch alone. She found that she suddenly had the power to give back life.       She knew that this was no accident. Her appreciation for a second chance at life spills out of her to this day. She knew from the point of her rebirth she was destined to celebrate, encourage, and save life. She abhors killing as she believes it robs the person of their chance at redemption. She never saw Farlow again, but dedicated herself to professional medical training. She has served as an officer on many ships. She has garnered a reputation as a hard worker, skilled medic, and an elf who can see the good in anyone. She is grateful to this day for her life, and she means to make the most of it.
