Hypatia

For as long as Hypatia could remember, she was always fascinated by how things work. From this curiosity grew her desire to understand the relationship between science and magic, if there's even a difference between the two.   An only child born to a history scholar father and scientist mother, she was raised in The Reactor. Her mother, Kosi, served as chancellor of The Axon School for twenty years before being replaced by Noigs, a half-golblin cleric who encouraged a robust competitiveness among the budding scientists at the school.   Her father, Edill, is a sadder story. One day, while Kosi was tutoring the young noble hafling Osborn Moonspark and Hypatia was locked away in her laboratory studying skeinshale’s effects on volunteer university students, Edill vanished from home without a trace. Hypatia went to meet him for lunch—as was their daily ritual—and found their meal prepared and cooling on their dining table. No note, no nothing. As beings who don’t trust emotions, both Kosi and Hypatia assumed he was taken by the Displacement, and poured themselves into their research.   As a logical Vedalken, she’s willing to listen to other opinions before issuing hers—but she will never allow feelings to cloud her judgment. Some of her past colleagues have called her cold-hearted—which is apt—she’s been known to disarm collegiate foes with her frostbite touch. Though she is calculating and cunning, she doesn’t know what it feels like to take another’s life.   Ever since her father’s disappearance, she obsessively studies Displacement to solve the puzzle of why it’s possible. As a well-respected member of The Dedication of the Chronicle, she’s conducted hundreds of interviews with Displacement survivors, and those who were Displaced into her town from other planes of existence–if the participants are willing to share.   Even though the Displacement—which some call "blinking"—is rampant in the Free Cities of Marlock, fewer and fewer survivors are willing to talk about their experiences, and Hypatia thinks more aggressive—and perhaps forceful—methods might be necessary. She needs to do something substantial to gain the attention of Eggnar, the leader of the alchemist gang called The Alems, who are known to use logic, deduction, and experimentation to determine the truths of how the world works—and how it can be manipulated to their wills.
