Goblinoids Species in Gates of Eternity [2.0] | World Anvil

Goblinoids

Goblinoids are a relatively rare category of species, way less populous in the Grand Empire of Karadia than for example the xylmade or humans. They however managed to establish a number of countries on their own, and are even more numerous in the Labyrinth, making their continued existence to not be in danger of extinction.   The goblinoids' common ancestry is doubted by many, who claim that calling these species 'goblinoids' and considering them a single family is like considering 'humanoids' to be have a common ancestry. The common elements of all the goblinoids is leathery skin and overpresence of fangs when compared to humans (close to half of their teeth is fangs, if not more).   Other scholars claim that the very fact that creatures with such traits inhabit territories close to each other is a sign of common ancestry - after all, goblinoids are what elves would be if they were created before the written language. A family of roughly similar species inhabiting lands close to each other, and with unclear history.   The goblinoids in Karadia are most commonly encountered in Nortarrica (especially the western one) and on practically all levels of the Labyrinth. They are no known goblinoid populations outside of Karadia, leading some to speculate some collection between them and the Labyrinth (or just Karadia).

Basic Information

Anatomy

All goblinoids have leathery skin (of colours ranging from green to brown and everything in between, with only the deep goblins being considered an exception to that colouristic), but are otherwise humanoids. The skin appears to be 'tougher' but still mostly smooth, a feeling often described as rather peculiar. It is significantly more resistant to slashes, but not to a point where it actually makes a difference against a sword.

Biological Traits

Subspecies
Goblins are an internally diverse species that suffers from its own reproduction cycle. While goblins reproduce quickly, their women require regular intake of nutritious food (and lack of contact with alcohol and other harmful substances) during the pregnancy, or they will give birth to highly devolved horgoblin (a subspecies of goblins) that are cunning (yet often merciless) devolved forms of goblins.   This forces the goblins to make many alterations of their society, which still - at least in modern, troublesome world - hasn't fully got rid off the problem of self-perpetuating horgoblin swarms that the goblin societies sometimes spawn.   Orcs are a dedicated warrior-species that appears to be closely related to the goblins. They are taller, stronger and fiercer, and also employ a rather peculiar reproduction method - they are an all-male species who seeks females of other species to reproduce (which, thanks to Second Era's Imperial Ministry of Internal Affairs, actually tends to be consensual in modern times).   Today the connections between the goblins and orcs are almost forgotten by both sides. While they acknowledge their similarity, they are two completely different species.   Trolls are a curio. While they certainly appear to possess the goblinoid traits, they are much more widespread (appearing in entire Karadia, but mostly absent from the Labyrinth), solitary, much less inteligent- and homicidally aggresive against all non-trolls.   And that's without counting the fact that they have some truly worrying traits (such as ability to devour minds of others). Their typical attachment to the goblinoid family tends to be done simply because taxonomist seem to have no idea what trolls actually are.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Goblinoids appear to have an eyesight that's slightly inferior to human (which some consider to be a proof of their adaptation to the Labyrinth's environment), but better hearing and a sense of smell (although not by far). The relatively similarity on that field is cited as another proof of goblinoid common ancestry.
