Goblins Species in Gates of Eternity [2.0] | World Anvil

Goblins

Goblins are a species way past its prime. While nobody knows that today, their ancient empire - known as the Sekarkan Empire - was the only surface power to challenge the Ancient Dragons and actually engaged their First Empire in long war for the dominance over the world.   When it become apparent that they are beginning to lose, they managed to relocate the entirety of their population into Labyrinth, who to this day remains the greatest and more insane architectural feat ever achieved by the mortals of this world.   However, their Labyrinthian empire was eventually shattered by the failed mass-ascendence attempt that has resulted in a plague of parasitic crystals that has devoured their entire civilization, leaving only a precious few goblins alive. And when - despite losing most of their culture and knowledge of their own history in the process - they manage to at least partially rebuild what they lost, the most populous goblin kingdoms were all corrupted by the Pentagram, creating the rather terrifying species of deep goblins.   Today they persevere only in their surface kingdoms in the western part of the Nortarrika region of the Grand Empire of Karadia, and in their remaining holdouts in the Labyrinth (most of which are under their surface kingdoms, but there are lesser goblin kingdoms outside of that region). And if all of the previous disasters weren't enough, the modern goblin civilizations is plagued by the peculiarities of its own reproductive cycle.   In the end, the goblins might be a lost-cause in the long term, a species that is so historically unlucky that it's destined to become extinct. But even if that's the truth, the goblins refuse to give up.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Goblins as a whole heave a leathery skin in a colour of a mix between very deep brown and dark green, with the ones living on the surface tending towards the latter while the long-time Labyrinth residents typically having the former colour. They also have way more fangs than humans, but without losing all of the molar teeth (the best of describing them is by saying that all premolar teeth are replaced with fangs). This results in smiles that are often quite unnerving.

Biological Traits

Forms
Hobgoblins are the standard form of the goblins. 1,6-1,8m high, reasonably strong, and possessing human-like intelligence. They tend to eschew a bit of a pack mentality, with very close family ties and dislike for individual heroics in battle (instead they prefer fighting and achieving things as a team).   Horgoblins are the devolved form of the goblins. 1,4-1,5m high, not particularly strong, intelligence level of a dimwitted (and brutal) human child. They can speak (however primitively), but that is the limit of their cognitive abilities. They are barbaric and aggressive, and have very little regard for their own life (though are cunning enough to use traps and avoid enemies that are obviously way too strong).

Subspecies
Deep Goblins are one of the most horrifying cases of an entire species recreated and enthralled to some greater supernatural power. They are goblins from the deeper layers of the Labyrinth that have been corrupted by the forces of the Pentagram, resulting in a species who sense of morality is essentially reversed. They are self-destructive species for whose murder, rape and every other attrocity (even against their own kind) requires no justification.   Without the archdaemons and demigods of the Pentagram watching over them and enforcing their will over the swarms of the deep goblins, their every 'society' would have immediately ended in an orgy of bloodshed.

Genetics and Reproduction

The biggest curse of all the modern goblins is the way their reproduction cycles work. The 'default' form of the goblins are the hobgoblins (typically called 'goblins') - the reasonably tall and of generally human-like intellect. However if their females are mistreated during the pregnancy (by which one can mean both actual abuse and them not eating nutritious enough food due to poverty), especially the early one, the result will be an activation of some sort of 'survival override' written into their genetics for reasons unknown.   The result of this override will be the birth of a horgoblin - significantly devolved form of goblins, that are not only much shorter but also significantly more animalistic and bestial. They are actually considered to be akin to cunning and dangerous vermin in goblin societies (and by the Empire as a whole), who will gladly engage in murder, rapine and rape with little regard for their own safety (although they will avoid overwhelmingly powerful enemies).   The nature of the horgoblins isn't immediately obvious, as it often takes a few years for the traits to become fully noticeable. At this point, many of them are cunning enough to escape into the wilderness, where they join packs of wild goblins that are doing things directly responsible for them being classified as vermin.   Eventually, however, some of the packs get successful enough for their females to maintain decent level of nutrition during pregnancy, leading to birth of the hobgoblins - that, being brought up among the barbaric and animalistic horgoblins, typically take after them. The result is a boost of strength of said wild gobling packs, and the hobgoblins installing themselves as a ruling caste (prone to using their horgoblin cousins as expendable cannonfodder).   Their attacks weaken and decimate the goblin civilization's outskirts, leading to problems with food supply (among other, even less savoury problems) that lead to more horgoblins being born, which makes them a constant threat that is slowly weakening every civilized goblin's country.

Dietary Needs and Habits

As one can expect from their teeth, the are omnivores but with slightly more interest in meat than human average.
