Trolls

Trolls are a mystery. They are towering, solitary creatures occasionally encountered in the Lost Lands that seem to possess a number of worrying abilities. They are generally categorized as Goblinoids due to them carrying the necessary traits while being (technically) sapient, however there is a problem with that categorization.   Nobody knows what relations the trolls could have with the goblin (including goblins themselves), and unlike the orcs (whose similarity to the goblins is obvious) they are very different from other members of the 'family'.   In the end, trolls might have been categorized as goblinoids simply due to their theoreticaly similarity - and because otherwise, they'd have to be granted an entirely new category. An event that would worsen the mystery surrounding them.   The truth behind them is actually quite extreme. The trolls are all that remains from the masters of the Xylian Dominion. While majority of them were exterminated during the Black Iron War, a handful survived. The victors did their best to erase their victim's past greatness from the world, going as far as to deface every sculpture, give selective amnesia to an entire continent and spread a troll-focused plague (that reached almost all of the survivors) that has either killed them or forcefully devolved them into the level barely surpassing an animal.   Whether they were originally connected to the goblins is anyone's guess at this point, but the fact that they assembled their empire right above the ruins of the goblin one is telling.   Following the collapse of all three post-Dominion successor states with some trollish participation (each hailing from a group that was either consciously spared or missed by the victors of the Black Iron War), the modern, barely sapient trolls are all that remains. Perhaps it is for the best.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Trolls are massively tall creatures approaching 3m, with extremely tough build that resembles the cave trolls from the LOTR film (but with three eyes). Their skin is thick and their bones are tough, rendering them extremely resistant to physical attacks. Each troll is an almost unstoppable juggernaut that requires a lot of power to put down. They are also resistant to the elements, which makes killing them even harder.

Genetics and Reproduction

Unknown. Nobody knows how the trolls actually procreate, they are typically encountered fully grown in the Lost Lands - and autopsy shows that all of them are asexual. This greatly thickens the mystery surrounding them.

Dietary Needs and Habits

They eat meat - and a lot of it. However they can also eat minds. By devouring brains of their victims they seem to be capable of transplanting parts of the target's memories to themselves, which also has a side-effect of slightly reinforcing their limited sapience. Technically by eating enough sapients in a short-time they could elevate themselves into human level of intellect, however this effect would only be temporary.   They still require some sapient brain from time to time to not devolve further (and they appear to hunger for such a 'treat', making it a part of their diet in a twisted way).

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Their five normal senses are at best so-so. They make up for it with their third eye's ability to perceive minds, emotions and connections. They can 'detect' a mind from a distance, they can immediately understand its mental state and when they break an adventuring party they can follow the survivors by perceiving the recent 'connection' between the slain leader of the party and his fleeing underlings.
