Tales of boats off the coast of Eldorwin - galleys with a mighty golden griffon set against a backdrop of forest green sails - that defy logic and reason. They contain crews of 80, but not a single member works to steady the ship. The wheel spins of its own accord, drifting perfectly past islands and through dangerously narrow reefs.
When the sound of cannon fire rings out across the ocean waves one has to wonder, did a man or woman take the shot, or did the ship itself sense danger?
Power Generation
Spellweaves are powered mainly by magic. This magic comes in the form of 2 large crystals - around 6 feet in height alone and anywhere between 2 and 3 feet wide per crystal.
The crystals themselves are actually rather ordinary, except in their size. Found across the Charyntar mountains, they were originally broken down and used to make jewellery. Now, the Unio Inventorum has found another purpose for them. Over time, magic is woven into the very fabric of these crystals, a process that takes almost a year per crystal as well as several power magic users (typically wizards because of their innate and relatively stable magical abilities). Once a crystal is charged, it can power a Spellweave for the better part of 3 years before it needs to be replaced.
Usually 2 crystals are kept on the ship, with 1 crystal in current use, and the others as back ups in case the first crystal should fail for any reason.
The use of these magically infused crystals allows the boat to pilot itself. A crew is not really required, but one is kept on board and trained to maintain and sail a galley in the event that one or more of the crystals fail, or in the event that the spellweave is boarded.
A spellweave can control the following:
- whether the sails are raised or lowered
- the angle the sails are directed in
- turning the wheel at the helm of the ship
- raising or lowering the anchor
- firing the cannons
- lighting and putting out the lanterns along the sides of the ships
