Compass like in appearance, with a faint, blue glow surrounding the needle. Gyde-points are tools invented from long before the Great Scourge, imbued with magic designed for tracking all manners of creatures. All that is required is something that holds the essence of the creature one wishes to track, placed onto the needle, and after a moment or two the gyde-point will show you the way to your destination.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
On appearance alone, one might mistake a gyde-point to be an ordinary compass - an easy mistake to make considering how alike the two items are. However, there are no markings of north, south, east or west inside the gyde-point, simply a needle to point one in the right direction.
It is the needle that is imbued with a magical essence, enough to keep it working as it should until the needle itself is broken, at which point the needle is no longer magical. The magical essences comes from scoutflies, tiny creatures that are known for their excellent tracking capabilities.
In order to track a creature, an individual needs to place a piece of it's 'essence' on the centre piece of the gyde-point (where the needle is attached to locket). It may take a minute or two for the magic to kick in, but once it does the needle will start spinning. It will stop once it determines the direction of the creature whose essence has been used, and will continue to point in that direction until the essence is either removed or used up.
The method is not precise and has it's downsides. It is very difficult for the gyde-point to make distinctions between creatures of the same species. In order to do so, one would either need to enchant the gyde-point further, or provide a piece of essence that distinctly belongs to a sole creature. This means that, if there are two or more of the same creature in a close enough proximity to the gyde-point, it may find it difficult to detect which direction the creature is in. In this instance, it will direct an individual to the closest creature.
