House of Baudelaire

In the province of Belsia, where shadows of ancient spires play upon the cobbled streets of Tsarsailles, the House of Baudelaire holds dominion. Their rule is not just one of wealth and power, but of legacy.
The Lady Vontessa and her Lord Consort, Halaric Devreux
  Rulers of Palace DuPont
old money and mysterious magic rying back to the first Baudelaires to gain power and wealth in Belcour.

I like to think the OG Matriarch, Eleonor was sort of a high ranking general or officer in some wars and went down the path she did as a way to take power by conquest before leaving war behind for subtlety.
So maybe she fought the crown as a means to gain legitimacy, while masquerading the fight to the country as a rebellion
Like she knew she didn’t want to keep fighting, thus the familial betrayal and selling her kin out for recognition
I could see a lengthy war happening, and her seeing an offer of alliance a way to gain more power. She takes the higher title instead of losing the nation and in her mind the belcoursian people get to live on, with her in command, instead of getting wipes out by the larger Mercadia.
Yeah and she gets to take the seat instead of having to continue listening to the whims of her cousins
All other nations were fighting a losing battle unfortunately with Mercadia, it had food, money and armies, so to avoid destruction while still maintaining power, she folded into them, taking the reigns of her province while ousting the cousins, hence so many Signorias (sovereign states)
