The shards were refined as a way to control dragons, this property is similar to all out plane beings.
The shards themselves were broken down after the 5th era began as black portals began to stop working. These crystals are remnants of the astral daggers used as keys to enter other planes. They drive dragons to madness because dragons are from the moons and these broken portals have maddening effects on the people of the planes. Some of the last black crystals working are with the Followers of the Grey. Their crystals used to be grey but have gone black over time as their leader was locked away.
Souls can be trapped in these crystals, Indra was kept in one of there to keep her alive by her father who couldn't save her.
The black obelisk on Milos was used by Sootha, going by Ilma, to traverse into the mortal plane even though gods usually can't travel into Galfin.
So planar travel is a lot more rare in the modern day. We travel through black portals, something could cause planar travel portals to stop working and shatter. Leaving the modern day mostly stuck to it's plane except for rare exceptions
when the doors shatter, they form little black crystals, these crystals have adverse affects on people of other planes who are on Galfin, kinda like a signal from their homeland that clouds their minds
in the Kingfisher arc, the baddies used stored black crystals to drive dragons mad and incite a uprising against the threat that had just awoken
dragons being from the other planes, would be driven mad by these shard that were once their only way home. Those black crystals up until now didn't really have an origin, but shattered black portals could be it
There was also a Black obelisk on Milos, where a fight happened right before Iona killed Snerz
that black obelisk no longer works but was the way that Sootha traveled to the mortal plane to meet her husband
Gods aren't meant for the mortal plane but this obelisk (actually a black portal) gave her a way to sneak in as a disguised mortal to bear children with Oceanus Tempest
so Black doors have a few spots of interest in the lore already, the black crystals being part of it just adds to their other plane nature.
