Tyrendor and Wyrendor

The legend surrounding Tyrendor and Wyrendor, the twin river dragon deities, describes how the rivers and streams across Galactus were formed.

In the legend, the brothers were born from the ground itself, springing from deep within the stone and dirt and arriving, blinking, into the sunlight of the surface world. From behind hem rushed a spring full of clear, clean water. At the time, which was early in the Era of Creation, the only water on Galactus was in the oceans, briny and unsuitable for drinking. In those days, the ground was barren but for those plants which grow well in arid landscapes: cacti, sagebrush, and so on. The only source of fresh water was the rain which fell occasionally.

When the brothers burst from the soil in a burst of fresh water, they gazed about at the vast landscape around them. Born deep underground in the cracks between boulders, the two felt an urge to run as far and as fast as they could. And so they did. Across the world the brothers ran, their bodies dragging long gullies into the ground. When their claws plunged deep into soil and stone, they brought up springs of fresh water to fill the scratches in the world. As each depression filled and flowed with life-giving water, they continued their journey across land and sea. When the brothers rested, they dug wide, shallow scrapes in the ground. As they slumbered, the water flowed into these holes and filled them to the brim, creating ponds and lakes.

It is believed that Tyrendor and Wyrendor eventually tired of their running and settled down together in a vast lake, perhaps Lake Lokus, where they entered a deep sleep that they have still not awoken from. Some say that over time their bodies were covered by silt and sand until their forms vanished deep underground over millennia, perhaps returning them to the deep aquifers underground from where they were born.
