Althea

The World-Mother

'Long ago, before you or I or any living creatures were around, there was no world at all. Time itself did not exist. All there was, was Brantis, the abyss. And from somewhere deep in its heart awakened a tiny light. Our World-Mother, Althea. She pushed away the nothingness until she had birthed something, there, deep in the void. And that something became Galactus. It became all the planes and all the light and warmth and life in the universe. And time began to move, to flow, one instant at a time.' -adapted from the Book of Beginnings

The Beginnings

It is said that Althea created the world in order to push away Brantis, the void. To do so, she created what is commonly known as a soul anchor, a source from which she could draw power. Some say it was a star, but no one truly knows what Althea's soul anchor was. Althea used her power to create the planes of existence, from the Astral Plane to the Material Plane, and down into the abyss, where Brantis was pushed further and further away as the World-Mother created to fill the nothingness. She soon grew lonely, however, and fashioned herself three children. Her children then began to make their own creations, and soon life sprang from the planes.

The Vanishing

Althea watched over the world for almost 3 millennia, keeping, with the help of her children and their children, order in the world. Together they kept the monsters and the darkness back from civilisation, but never so far as to let mortals forget that the world could be dangerous to those who were not careful. However, as the centuries passed, the deities forgot about Brantis and neglected to keep the abyss in check. Brantis and several other dark deities gathered power and mortal followers, bringing the nothingness back out of the abyss and spreading it throughout the planes. What followed was a cosmic war between the deities, bringing chaos to the world while the battle raged on. At the end of it all, the deities of the darkness were cast back into the abyss, and the victors used all of their power available to put a seal on the abyss. However, somewhere in the fighting, Althea had vanished, bringing the stars of the sky with her. None could find her, though they searched throughout the planes. Their only indication that she might still exist somewhere was that time kept moving. Assuming she had expended every last bit of her power, the deities stopped their search, believing she would reappear once her power was restored. To this day, she is still missing, and the stars have been gone so long that none remember them and some do not believe they ever existed. Yet time still flows.
