The Ages of Gaio

The major eras in the world as agreed upon by most mortal scholars.

Age of Titans / Age of Idolatry

For reasons that have never been uncovered, the pantheon of gods depart from the mortal world. They never again materialize on Gaio, instead letting their wills be known through chosen priests and oracles. The mortal societies across Gaio are left abandoned to their own devices, bereft of the divine protection they once flourished under. Many mortal cultures are destroyed or else come under the rule of powerful entities such as giantkin, dragons and invasive fiends. The future of the mortal races hangs upon a precarious knife edge in a now drastically altered and more dangerous world.

    The Kyriarchos
    Religious event

A group of celestial beings, one-time servants to the gods themselves, remain behind in the mortal world on the island of Xetl. The mortals who live in the area praise them as the heralds of the departed gods and revere them as their rulers and figure heads.

Age of Imperium / Age of Hubris

For the first time since the gods departure, a number of mortal cultures begin to grow and thrive under their own efforts. They begin to expand their influence across the known world, toppling those titans that try to stop them and subsuming other mortal societies. Three burgeoning empires emerge, and their cultures spread their influence far and wide.

  • C. -2999
    The Rise of Ithoryl
    Cultural event

The high elves of Ithoryl on the continent of Laqoram grow to become the preeminent mages in the lands, expanding their power beyond their home region and absorbing their neighbors. These are the first steps of the Ithorylion Empire.

  • C. -1000
    The Twilight Exodus
    Disbandment

The elven priests of Sharivhem, unable to tolerate the rampant corruption and wickedness in their society, abandon Ithorylion on mass and make their way Xetlan in a part-exodus, part-pilgrimage to reaffirm their faith. The anger of the Ithorylion imperial court at this perceived betrayal is the turning point towards the outbreak of war between the two rival empires.
