Across the sun-scorched sands of the Sezkherak Desert, lonely trade caravans wend their way from oasis to oasis, bearing their rare and exotic goods to the bustling cities beyond. Across the hazy horizon loom the monoliths and statuary of an ancient civilisation, guarding secrets and treasures that those alive today could only dream of.   Rising above the lush forest canopies of the Rajnavorg, the temples and citadels of Xetlan stud the landscape like stars in the firmament. Over the din of bustling markets and the hymns of the faithful, a growing unrest threatens this oldest and grandest of mortal cultures.   In the land of Forgotten Giants, out of craggy shores and frost-bitten fjords come fleets of dragon ships, setting sail in search of glory, renown and riches. In this harsh, unforgiving land, all must struggle and fight for their survival.
Gaio is a world that has gone through much tribulation in it's long history. First were the glories of the Dawning Days, when the gods walked the earth, shaping it and shepherding the mortal races whom they created, until the great abandonment, where the gods suddenly vanished from the world, leaving the mortals to continue alone.   Then came the age of the Titans, beings of great and terrible power who rose to supplant the departed gods and impose their own designs over of the world and its peoples. For years beyond even an elf's reckoning, cultures and civilisations rose and fell at the whims of the titans, especially when rivalries between titans erupted into open conflict, for the powers their unleashed was great enough to level cities and alter coastlines.   The ages wore on and even the titans rose and fell in their turn. The mortal races of the world forged onward as best they could, founding cities, dynasties and cultures to leave their mark on the world before they too faded into the annals of history. Today, much of the known world is recovering from a terrible conflict known as the Collapse, which saw a number of great and powerful mortal civilisations engage in a war that scarred the lands of every continent. Only one of those cultures has survived into this Common Age, but now new cultures and nations have risen from the ashes of that terrible period, ready to leave their own mark on the world.
