Cal-Corvec

The Old Guard

As seen in
The Northwestern most of all the Cal, Corvec once watched over the Pelliny border. After the Second Pel-Atheran War and the following unification of the great states, Corvec lost much of its political and military clout. Now Corvec is a semi-prosperous city state of fishermen and farmers, with only a moderate population. The people of Corvec have long suffered the worst from Idrian raids along the coast and rivers, with many villages being devastated and a large number of refugees fleeing to Cal-Corvec. This influx of refugees has put a great deal of stress on the city’s infrastructure, compounding the hardship that has fallen on the county. With both loss of revenue and people Cal-Corvec has found it increasingly difficult to field the forces necessary to defend the long coast lines of the Shattered Sea. As well being off the main trade line with the foriegn powers, Cal-Corvec has never been as wealthy as many of the other Cal, despite being one of the largest bread baskets of Athera. The levied soldiers from Corvec also show this in their equipment. Armored far more basically than the other states.

Defences

The great high walls of Cal-Corvec fully encircle the old city, with multiple in gated distracts. Siting on the crest of a rocky hill is Castle Corvec the citidel of the city, and home to the King.

History

First Pellenin War

It is said that when the war began, it began in the fields of Corvec. It was the sudden charge of horses and iron that signaled Pelliny's coming. Their cavalry quickly swept the countryside, driving the citizens behind the great walls of Corvec. The sitting King raised his army to defend his walls, and his people volunteered en mass. The following Siege of Cal-Corvec would last years, with constant resupply by river keeping the defenders fighting ready while The Enduring unified the armies of Athera, under a single banner. Holding firm Corvec bought the Atheran's the time they needed to ready for a long war. It was before the walls of Cal-Corvec which the army of Pelliny was broken, and the treaty was signed in the throne room of Castle Corvec.

Atheran Unification

Having been the catalyst for the unification of Athera, Cal-Corvec earned much political leverage. The sitting King of Cal-Corvec was elected as the first High King, and oversaw the founding of Cal-Athera. Taking the lessons learned from the siege, he designed Cal-Athera to be the greatest of all the fortress cities. This capital would be nigh impregnable, but would take decades to construct. During the cities construction he conducted the Council of Kings out of Cal-Corvec.

Conquest of Pelliny

Having earned its place during the war, the second Council of Kings met where the Pel-Atheran treaty had been signed, and made clear their intention. Hardly eighty years after the First Pellinin War, Athera mobilized its unified army for the second time. Advancing into Pelliny they fought many open field battles. Like the first war, the people of Cal-Corvec volunteered en mass to fight, making up a full quarter of the full Atheran force. The King's and Marshal's used Cal-Corvec as their staging ground, with the fields and fisharies feeding the army on the march.

Post War

With Pelliny now an Atheran state, and the construction of Cal-Athera now complete Cal-Corvec's position rapidly began to change. With out the threat of invasion from the north military resources were pulled from the region taking with them much Corvec's political clout. It was as foriegn trade routes expanded that this wanning of Corvec's power was made abundantly clear to all. Being set aside and off the main trade routes, much of the wealth of commerce bypassed the city starting the true decay of the once greatest city of Athera. Held afloat for centuries by its mass export of food, Corvec shifted more and more into a city of laborers.

The Age of Raids

Once blessed by its position on the sea, Cal-Corvec found further hardship as raiders from across the Shattered sea sailed to her shores. The raids hit the countryside hard, devistating villages and killing entire communities. Rare at first these raids became ever more common over the following century. With the pressure of these raids, the city fell under even harder of times. What money the king had, was now spent on bribes to the raiders, paying mercinaries, or maintaining an ever larger army. This depletion of the cities wealth has forced the King to focus more on his immediate boarders, leaving some of the more outlying villages largely to fend for themselves.
