River Loire is one of the main waterways of France, used to transfer goods from the Bay of Biscay inland and back. Throughout history the valley around it housed different cultures, fed the people and connected them with the outside world. At the crossroads between the European north and south, the Loire saw a fair share of conflicts as well, one of the bloodiest being The Hundred Years War. Nevertheless, it always persisted as the most flourishing and fertile region in France, and maybe even in Europe.

Geography

The Valley consists of a big number of small rivers, most of them tributaries to the Loire. There are also dense forests and sporadic hills. The main part of the valley is covered with grasslands, which were mostly turned into fields by the year 1429. Because of wheat and other grain, Loire Valley looks like something out of a Van Gogh painting: a neverending sea of yellow and orange blending together in various weird forms that can be observed from atop the hills. The air here is so clear, travelers love crossing the region because it's much easier to walk there.

The biggest cities are situated on the riverside. Among them are Orleannes, Tours and Blois. There is also a great number of villages scattered throughout the fields. First, there were just lonely houses near great big wheat patches, but then more and more people started settling there, turning remote buildings into bustling small towns. In addition, fishing villages near the Loire itself became ports. More people came in there than ever before, attracted by foreign goods and prospects of trade. By 1429 there were cities and villages like this all around the valley, which itself was split between a great number of fiefdoms.

Ecosystem Cycles

The Valley conforms to what is called a mild continental climate. Summers here can range between comfortable and somewhat hot. Winters are moderate, easy to live through in the harsh Medieval times. It still snows here, but not as much as in Paris, for example, which is not that far from the valley. The tributary rivers can freeze, but Loire never freezes completely, letting smaller vessels still navigate it. Spring and Autumn are the brightest seasons of the year. In spring, all plants bloom, creating a magnificent sight of this place just breating with life. It's time of carnivals and seeding, and if there isn't a war on, one can see and hear joy and happiness wherever they go. In the autumn, after the harvest, all the broadleaf trees of the not so numerous but quite expansive forests of the Loire Valley start shedding their yellow and red leaves, creating crunchy and bright carpets on the ground.

Снег тут идёт, конечно же, но не так обильно, как в Париже, хоть он и достаточно недалеко. Речушки зимой замерзают, но Луара уходит под лёд лишь частично, сохраняя судоходность для малых кораблей. Весной и осенью долина становится особенно яркой. Во время первой цветут все растения, создавая ощущение, что каждый сантиметр региона пышет жизнью. Это время карнавалов и посева, и если не идёт война, повсюду можно услышать, как люди радуются и празднуют. Осенью, после сбора урожая, все лиственные деревья не таких уж и частых здесь лесов сбрасывают свои жёлтые и красные листья, создавая хрустящие яркие ковры под ногами.

Many might think of Loire Valley as a standard, even a cliche European location, one from a fairy tale. Princess and princesses reside in their castles in a fantasy land like this one, and we've all seen it way too often. And yes, it is a place some of these tales were invented at, back during the Gallic times, but it still is a magnificent place to live, to see, to love. Nothing can be as soothing as a place which is like a fairy tale land, and we've all started to forget how beautiful it is. It's worth a visit. The only sad thing about this valley is that war also visits it regularly.

Проблема в том, что война тоже её посещает, и достаточно часто.

Fauna & Flora

In 1429 AD, there is three major groups of fauna living in the valley, if we don't count the fish in the rivers. In the forests on the east, wildlife reigns. Once can encounter stags, boars and wolves all around those parts. The untouched parts of grasslands are a habitat for various small rodents such as hamsters and mice, which often fall prey to owls. Finally, the main animal population of the valley consists of livestock. You can see farmers, horse breeders and shepherds all over the place, and with them - cows, chickens, geese, horses galore.

If you get up a hill and throw a stone in a random direction, it'll likely fall into a field of wheat. It's all over the valley, wheat fields here are like an endless sea. There are also edible berries and mushrooms in the forests, and sometimes one can find some lonely wineyards amongst numerous grain farms.

Если вы подниметесь на холм и бросите с него камень, скорее всего он приземлится в пшеничном поле. Её тут масса, как волн в море или звёзд на небе. В лесах также растут грибы и съедобные ягоды, а в полях, посреди зерна, можно иногда найти редкие виноградники.

Natural Resources

The main natural resource of the valley is its land, fertile and rich with minerals. It allows the region to be the main bread basket of France. No wonder many wars were fought for this territory.

History

This section only covers history of Loire River Valley until the year 1429. The "current" state of the location is described later down the line. Everything after 1429 isn't relevant for Vicissitudes of Time for now, but it will be added as a separate article if a need arises.

At the dawn of history, this land was settled by the Fey, the creatures of the forest. Fringe doesn't know much about what the land looked like before the Indo-European peoples started migrating here, though archaeological findings suggest that there were Humans present not far from here, in the caves down south, in the direction of the Alps. They might've been subservient to the Fey. From what we know about the dynamic between Humans and Inhumans, the latter used to use the former to make their gods stronger. The Fey worshipped nature in all its forms, so the local goddess might've been among the strongest deities there were at the time.

But times changed, and the "lesser" fey such as pixie and magical animals left the lands, and the Humans have started to arrive en masse. By the first millenia BCE the dynamic changed. Now there were only the Elves and maybe some scattered Fey in a direct numerical competition with Humans. And the latter were multiplying quickly. Loire Valley became one of the melting pots of ancient France, where cultures started intermixing. The more advanced Elven one was dominating the inhabitants of the region, and gradually, Humans have started learning natural magic, studying to become druids and keepers of the forests. The resulting civilization have become known as the Celts. Though disunited, they were faithful to their culture and traditions. Later, when Celtic humans started migrating to far reaches of Europe, they've brought this reverence for nature along, resulting in the local goddess becoming even stronger, branching into many different regions, becoming known by many names, and winning a place in the general pantheon of many European peoples. You might've heard about her. We don't know her original name, but the Celts used to call her Danu, and the Norse - Freya. She never forgot her birthplace, the Loire Valley. It seems the land is blessed by the goddess, and this blessing persists despite many wars that shook the region, despite cataclysms and downfall of faith itself after the The Enlightenment.

Time has passed and the land changed its masters again. By the turn of the eras, the Romans led by Julius Caesar have conquered the region. He has exploited the divisions among the Celts and managed to steamroll through the entirety of Gallia in under ten years. Now it was the time for the Elves to leave: they fell victim to the Great Roman Purge. Those who survived, fled to Britania and further. Some of them resettled to an island that's hidden from the Human eyes to this very day, the mythical land of Avalon. Now, the Romans were in the Loire valley, quickly assimilating local culture. The magi of Illusion have settled in the Loire Valley.

Though Time wasn't kind to the Romans, too. Four centuries after the conquest, the German and many other tribes poured into Gaul, taking the region for their own. After the last Emperor of the West was deposed, Loire Valley saw conflict quite often. Clovis' expansion, Battle of Tours against the Arab invaders, then Charlemagne's reign... Up until the XIV century there were many wars of various magnitudes that shook the valley. And it still persisted, quickly healing itself and getting back to feeding the people.

But the Loire never saw a bloodier conflict that the Hundred Years War. After centuries of swapping lands through wars or inheritance, the crowns of France and England decided to resolve the issue once and for all. It took 113 years to do that. By 1429, Loire River Valley found itself divided by three forces. Everything up to Orleans was English-controlled territory, with their huge army besieging the city of Orleannes. On the other side of the river, the forests were loosely controlled by the Burgundians. The rest of the valley was still in French hands, though the land suffered. Crops were burned or destroyed by parties at war. People tried to survive on what they've managed to save over the years.

Самый кровавый конфликт, что видела Луара - это Столетняя война. После веков обмена землями через войны и наследство, короли Франции и Англии решили окончательно решить вопрос того, кому что принадлежит. "Обсуждали" 113 лет. The land itself suffered greatly from all the wars and conflict. And this is no ordinary land, as we know it. Though Christianity took hold over the entirety of Europe and the pagan gods had no more power here, their magic was still there. Loire must've called for help, just like the The Wild Field used to do before its magic had dissipated. Loire called, and with it - all of France called for relief. When would it finally come?..
