Wendel Eglantine

Origins

Wendel's origins are shrouded in mystery. Very few people are aware of his actual age and that he is not actually from this plane of existence.

Wendel is a plane traveller and originally came from Exandria, from an ancient aristocratic family in the Zemni Fields. His real name is Wendel Briarwood. He is the nephew of Silas Briarwood and was turned by his uncle into the vampire he is now.

He changed his name to Eglantine when he arrived in Frencal - a near-direct translation of Briarwood. Wendel, in his new state, became a great proponent of the God of Death, known as Marwoleath in Frencal. Wendel has been known to offer sacrifices to his master, a few of them his enemies' lives.

Through his links with Marwoleath, Wendel was given a powerful ring that allowed him to travel through planes. Wendel was drawn to Frencal in the name of his god: Marwoleath has unfinished business in this part of the universe. Wendel also hopes that he can escape the fate of his uncle, Silas by removing himself from Exandria.

Backstory

Through his aristocratic roots, Wendel was able to pretend that he was the scion of one of the displaced noble northern families. When the Frencal Republic was created, many noble families fled the new order and settled on lands bought within the small Kingdoms of the Frencal Empire.

Wendel picked a remote part of the Kingdom of Lacan to settle in. He had two of his associates - people he himself turned into vampires - to pose as his noble parents and the three of them bought the lands of an impoverished laird near the The Verdine Valley in the east of the country.

Slowly but surely, Wendel made his way into Lacan high society, then bought himself a beautiful estate on the shore of Lac Mignon in the southern Kingdom of Malory: Castel Malrestan.

From this place of power and intrigue, Wendel plans to expand his influence and build himself an empire of darkness all in glory to his god.

Powers and Personality

Wendel is a very cautious dhampir. He remembers what happened to his aunt and uncle and he is spider-like in his rise to power. He is a very private person but has one weakness: he falls in love very easily.

In his domain of Castel Malrestan, in the crypt on the first floor, one can see two tombs, one contains the body of Sirena, a widowed Marquess from Lacan who Wendel failed in turning undead.

Sirena, Marquess of Clairmont, died in the process. Wendel cannot forgive himself for her death and hopes, one day, to bring her back to life. On Sirena's tomb, one can read the inscription: 'My beloved Sirena, I pledge to thee my blood.'

On the other tomb, one can read another inscription: 'My darling Mirren, I pledge to thee the world and beyond.' Mirren is another aristocratic lady that Wendel turned into a vampire not long ago. Mirren is one of his new conquests. Mirren, Lady Du Val d'Argent , has not yet woken up from the sleep her change put her under.

Marwoleath

'From beyond the grave, fear the one who stalks the living. Death is is friend, as I am his God. His powers are forever tied to the darkness of the tomb, and his ambitions, the only light in his heart.'

Story Leads

  • Wendel would make an excellent spider-like supervillain and provide an interesting and complex baddie for a low-level party in and around Castellac.

  • - Wendel could also undergo a redemption arc, with his love for Mirren becoming a focus for change.

    - The dhampir could also be a morally grey character that a low-level party could befriend or intimidate to gain knowledge or spy on the complex going-ons around Lac Mignon. Wendel would react strongly to any harm befalling his beloved Sirena and Mirren.

    Spookoctober Cue 3: Stalk

For Spookoctober this year, I decided to create 27 characters for my DnD world of Frencal.

They all have something in common: they all are servants in some form or another of the Janus-like God of Death: Marwoleath and his twin sister Morilupe.

All are deadly, cursed and black of heart and mind.
