Marteen Fellnight

Origins

Marteen was brought up within the Quiet Woods Kin in The Guarals' Moors, north of Lac Mignon and the pleasant spa town of Castellac where she now resides.

The Guaral Moors is a desolate, plateau stuck between the high mountains of the Monts de Glace and the Southern Jungles of Frencal in the small kingdom of Malory.
The Malory kings have tried for generations to subjugate the Guarals without success. Nowadays, a sort of truce between the Malory aristocracy and the Guarals has been brokered, and the two races coexist in peace.

Marteen's tribe was called the Quiet Woods Kin. Most of the Guaral tribes are hunters and shifters. They live in traditionally close-knit communities in stone-walled villages dotted all over the moors. Being extremely territorial, the Guarals respect each other's domain and are in fact, mostly, peaceful - only resorting to war when deemed necessary.

The Quiet Woods Kin was a small village on the edge of the Moors built in an ancient oak forest on the lower hills of the Monts de Glace. However, tragedy struck, and the village was wiped out one fine spring morning when an unspeakable evil woke up from its century-old sleep in the mountains and killed or enslaved most of the shifters in the village. Mel'Kazzar, the Inciendar was awake and intent on reclaiming his powerful hold on the jungles of Frencal.

Backstory

Marteen was a child when, the fiend, Mel'kazzar destroyed her village - she survived because her mother was a priestess of the Quiet Wood Kin and a devotee to the God of Death. Delora Fellnight, Marteen's mother, offered her life to save her daughter's. Morilupe, the Dark Plume, heard her servant's prayer, made Marteen invisible to the eyes of the fiend.

Marteen, who was 14 at the time, was spared and hid in the oak woods for three weeks until she was found. Morilupe had sent a dream to one of her priests: a Shardar-Kai by the name of Oshik.

Oshik found Marteen and brought her back to Port Moordeterr, a small fishing village on the shore of Lac Mignon, not too far from Castellac. There Oshik took over Marteen's training. Oshik noticed that Marteen was a gifted fighter and that coupled with her shifter abilities, she could become an excellent addition to his mercenary band: the Feathered Blade.

Under cover, Oshik runs his outfit as a religious faction of the God of Death, on the exterior, the Feathered Blade is just another mercenary outfit, offering its members' skills as security detail to Castellac's rich aristocratic visitors.

Powers and Personality

Marteen, now 28, is one of Morilupe's devotees and has been granted many boons from the goddess. Marteen can change into a Bear who is also the specter of the Bearfather: one of the primal spirits of the world.

When transformed her spectral bear is particularly strong and a great source of fear for her enemies. Marteen is devoted to the Feathered Blade and sees Oshik as a father figure.

However, Oshik is aware that Marteen's goal is to, one day, take her revenge on Mel'kazzar: the fiend who destroyed her village and ran away into the jungles with her kin as servants. When she deems she is strong enough to rid the world of the fiend, Marteen will leave her relatively easy life in Castellac and venture into the jungle.

Morilupe

'The Bear Maiden walks between the world of light and shadow. Her ways are my ways: no shadows can hold her as she is herself the Shadow of the World and in her shade, all shall live or die.'

Story Leads

  • Marteen will try to gather around her a worthy band of like-minded people to venture into the jungle and deal with Mel'Kazzar. This might be a good introductory arc to a campaign or one-shot. Marteen would test the candidates through a series of missions or the future party members could form their own mercenary band and pick up a few jobs until they feel ready to leave Castellac.

  • - Marteen could explore the jungles and find out that there is more than Mel'kazzar to fight there.

    - Marteen could decide to stay in Castellac and get involved in the many intrigues of the aristocracy: a yet-unknown witch running her schemes for power and riches in the Castellac's gambling hells.

    Spookoctober Cue 2: Specter

For Spookoctober this year, I decided to create 27 characters for my DnD world of Frencal.

They all have something in common: they all are servants in some form or another of the Janus-like God of Death: Marwoleath and his twin sister Morilupe.

All are deadly, cursed and black of heart and mind.
