Brotherhood of the Coast

Originally a band of desperate pirates and smugglers, the Brotherhood of the Coast formed in response to the ruthless pirate hunters known as the Black Spot Fleet: ruthless pirates, thugs and brigands who were paid to hunt down their own kin by the Castillian nobility.   The first members of Brotherhood, all victims of the Black Spots’ relentless crusade, joined forces and signed a charter of mutual protection. Under their First King—the legendary Captain Roberts—the Brotherhood defeated their enemies and reclaimed the seas from the schemes of Castillian nobles. Each Brotherhood ship is now a state unto itself: the crews elect Captains as representatives of a free Republic of Pirates.   Yet all know that their Republic would have scattered to the winds if not for the Gentleman Pirate, Captain Gosse. Famous for his civility, Gosse was elected King of the Pirates after the Devil Jonah himself slew Captain Roberts. Gosse worked tirelessly to build an enduring foundation for the Brotherhood, then retired, making way for Captain Bonaventura to win the necessary votes to become Queen.   Captain Bonaventura—Queen of the Brotherhood of the Coast—has declared war on the world since winning her crown. If the governments of Théah refuse to recognize the Brotherhood, then the Brotherhood will continue to take their boats, their cargo and their lives.   Now with the War of the Cross over and Eisen is in such dire straits, the Brotherhood recognizes it deserves a break. Travel and trade between Vestenmennavenjar and Eisen has been the lifeblood keeping Eisen alive ever since before the War. The pirates of Eisen have called an unofficial truce, halting all raiding and pillaging of Eisen’s cities until such time as the Nation can get back on its feet. The Brotherhood honors this cessation of activities, and any Brotherhood ships sailing Eisen’s waters enforce the ban on any ship that dares attack an Eisen town.   Many renegade raiding vessels still sail the Maw and even travel down the Nation’s rivers despite the ban. Should they be spotted, the Brotherhood always executes swift and brutal retribution. Brotherhood members often take the cargo from said raiders and distribute it among the local villages most in need, turning over the raiders for trial and justice before sailing away.   Meanwhile, the Brotherhood recruits Eisen by the dozen ever since the War, with more ships full of sailors taking to the seas every year. Eisen make fine sailors and their strong military training makes them excellent pirates.
