Aperature
The aperature is a novel optical device that can project images onto a spinning surface.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
The aperature consists of a darkened chamber with a small hole in one wall. Light from outside would pass through this aperture and create an inverted image of the outside scene on the opposite side of the device.
History
Acquisition
The precise origin of the device is unknown, as is its maker; only some vague sense that a trader had brought it from parts unknown. When presented and demonstrated before the reigning Sapa, an inverted image of the busy, but noiseless roadway outside materialized before the court. The scene captured in vivid detail within the confines of the audience chamber. The strange man explained in detail how the intricate parts were fitted together, what need to be done to maintain and operate it; and was gifted lavishly.
Significance
It is only withdrawn from its vault for entertaining certain nobles and artistic purposes.
Art
Specially chosen artists would trace the projected image onto silk for a realistic outline for paintings and other artworks. The end results are considered very valuable for their unique and obvious style compared to the competition.Entertainment
Additionally, the device is used in shadow puppetry, where intricate cut-out figures are manipulated between the light source and the projection surface to create the illusion of movement on screens of pale fabrics.
