Marus the Diety of the Southern Corner

The Mighty Warrior, Marus, has the ability to summon the strength and power of the sea to fight. Petulant, moody, and occasionally bloodthirsty, Marus and his Touched were known to charge fiercely into battle powerful enough to turn the tide in their favor. Ancient stories recount that the Water Touched army that Marus created provided the strength to tether Fezzeret in place in order to make the kill. Warriors who fight and worship Marus are known for their prowess, their vigilance, and their unrelenting fortitude.    Marus was the second god to arrive on 4 Corners, after Ignea, and he came at Ignea's call. While both gods and their subsequent religions teach of the cycles of life, Marus placed a particular focus on the destruction aspect and its cleansing abilities of the cycle where Ignea placed focus on the regeneration from destruction. Like the other four elemental gods, he created an army of Touched from the peoples of 4 Corners, those that possessed abilities similar to his own as well as the ability to transform into his likeness when the time is needed. Water touched not only posses a modicum of Marus' power, but also his personality. They are known to be brash, bold, easy to anger, and quick to fight when goaded into doing so, but calm, welcoming, and contemplative when in a state of rest or normalcy.    Those who worshiped Marus were known as Marans. Maran faithful built numerous temples throughout the Southern corner to worship their god. A cleric of Marus would be known to be both an acolyte of insight as well as a mighty warrior. Wargames and dueling competitions were common forms of celebration among the Marans. To die as a Maran warrior, fighting, was an honor among the faithful. Sparring is a common form of recreation and religious study. Duel curved blades was the favored weapon style among many of the warriors and faithful, but collecting as many masteries as possible was always encouraged. However, as time went by, culture devolved into ongoing and neverending violence. The calm and contemplative eroded away, leaving nothing but a culture of battle-hungry, fighting in the streets to take what they wanted from the weak.   The downfall came when Marus looked at his people, saw his reflection, and hated it. A thousand years after the Fall of Fezzeret, Marus decided to do what the oceans do best and cleanse the corner of all of the ugly it had. This event was known as Cataclysm- an immense tidal wave that crashed on the corner killing tens of thousands. After, he used all of his beacons across the corner to sink the land into a deep freeze. Many froze to death, and numbers fled the corner before dying of starvation. In the end, only 6 human families survived, and these families established the laws of the land that the Southern Corner of today still follow.   Worship of Marus of any kind: using his magics, stepping foot into a Maran religious building, any public prayer of the Maran religion is considered to be treason punishable by exile or death. The families wanted to ensure that after Marus left, only his cruelty and the people's ability to survive without him would be remembered.
