Qi

Qi is the language of the Xijallar. It is composed of thoughtforms rather than spoken or written words, since their communication travels by way of magical resonance within the semi-liquid athenosphere of Fortis. Since they lack the sensory organs required to process visual or auditory input, their art consists entirely of literature and its recitation.   There are no written texts in Qi, but the "echoes" of all the thoughtforms that have ever been expressed linger, so the Xijallar can "listen" to them at any point. By this mechanism, they have a perfect record of their history.   Poetry and prose focus on themes of temporality, beauty, community, family, and love. Since these concepts are also the vessels for their magical energy, and the scientific endeavors of the Xijallar work with the exchange and movement of magical energy, thoughtforms are at once literary, magical, and scientific. As they create art, the Xijallar explore new scientific principles and applications and transformations of magical energy.   It is a crime among the Xijallar for an adult not to contribute meaningful thoughforms, as it is their duty to society to expand the collective understanding of the world and their place in it.
