Neverwinter Stories: Heirs of Delzoun — Session 8

The Forge of Fury – Chapter Eight: The Brute from Many-Arrows

General Summary

Meanwhile, down in the chasm, Imbim scoured a broken stone bridge at the bottom. There were weathered statues of the dwarves who once ruled the mountain and orcish discards and refuse. When she surfaced again, the Heirs had returned with Old Yarrack as their prisoner. They hauled the chief into the chasm, rested in the dark, and interrogated him. In doing so, the Heirs learned that the Bloodytooth Clan was brought to the Stone Tooth by a one-eyed half-ogre who calls himself the Great Ulfe. The orcs originally came to acquire great weapons, but Ulfe has since installed himself as the de facto leader. The Bloodytooth clan has since remained in the dwarven ruins.
Not knowing what else to do with the old chieftain, the Heirs left him restrained on the ruined bridge and continued their delve. To their surprise, the halls once populated with orcs were now empty. Warm food was left out; personal effects were abandoned. After prying apart a barricade that led to a wide staircase, they discovered a lodge tended to a shamaness and two handmaidens. She was waiting for them. Upon their entry, she offered her full cooperation under one condition: the Great Ulfe suffers a violent and humiliating death.
From there, negotiations were tense yet swift. Burdug, the shamaness and wife of Yarrack, revealed that Great Ulfe was an envoy sent by the Kingdom of Many-Arrows to win their clan's favor. But the half-ogre was only power-hungry. He absconded with what remained of the Bloodytooth warband and their treasures. Courana and Geradil were taken as breeding stock. If not stopped, his unchecked greed will grow more violent against the miners, and eventually Blasingdell will be endangered.
It was an easy call to make. The Heirs agreed to kill the half-ogre. In exchange, Old Yarrack would gather his warriors and return to his holdings deep inside the Spine of the World. They set out immediately on their rescue mission, shamaness in tow. Down the stairs and across a river, they found their quarry, greedily hauling treasure chests and driving his followers like slaves.

Notes

  • While unable to collect names from the bridge, Helga was able to translate the name of this fortress. The Mountain Door.
  • One of the doors beyond the barricade had an old acid trap. After some trouble, the dwarves managed to save themselves and even harvest what remained in the drums.
  • Burdug the Shamaness said she was a claw of Luthic, the goddess of caves and mate of Gruumsh. The goddess was characterized by her iron talons for nails, which Burdug also possessed.
  • On their way down the stairs, the adventurers fought several stirges—the pest that required the barricade in the first place.
