Neverwinter Stories: Heirs of Delzoun — Session 10

The Forge of Fury – Chapter Ten: Ovostask's Quest

General Summary

The dwarves marched for two days back to Blasingdell, guarding their wounded and the two humans. Once the couple was behind the village walls, they turned northward and continued to one of the many Mines of Mirabar. According to Ovostask, he has a second lair there. The Heirs followed his vague yet useful directions through progressively less maintained mineshafts. Eventually, they came upon an illusory door that hid a gnome's warren. But the locals mistook them for trespassers. The gnome's chief engineer and sole militiaman, Jever Babblefen, confronted the dwarves with his multipurpose autoloading battle apparatus, or "ultimate weapon." The second the two sides met, chaos erupted. Helga managed to jump onto the apparatus, climb under the chassis, and deactivate it while the others dealt with the weapons. Once disarmed, the misunderstanding was cleared, and the Heirs were accepted as guests.
They rested in the warren for three days, consuming all manner of mushroom-based food and drink. Once Ovostask arrived, it was back to business. The gold dragon expressed his concern over a black dragon, Nightscale, who recently moved into the area. Having heard stories of Nightscale's wickedness, he feared why they came to Mirabar. Ovostask tasked the Heirs of Delzoun with learning anything they could about the dragon—their plans, weaknesses, fears, motivation—anything that could give him an edge in confronting them. And, if they were willing, an invitation to slay Nightscale with him. And they were; the Heirs gleefully accepted the quest and the accompanying ride back to Stone Tooth. Finally, Ovostask said he'd return shortly after gathering the arms needed for dragon slaying, leaving the dwarves at the mouth of the orc-dug tunnel.
A few hours of spelunking, a few hours of discoveries. A stirge hive near the remains of a dead dwarven explorer, a field of sparsely occupied dwarf-made sepulchers, a large multi-colored lizard bound in chains, the den of a troglodyte tribe. One discovery was a carved staircase that led below the Glitterhame to a long abandoned warehouse near a waterfall. Inside was a near-endless supply of spoiled food—vile and inedible to everything but the oozes that dwelt within. They attacked the adventurers, fruitlessly so, and were slain for their offense. Their equipment was damaged in the fray, so they chose to rest and repair in the deepest recesses of the warehouse.

Rewards Granted

Each discovery netted rewards large and small. The multi-colored lizard guarded two chests containing 2,200 silver pieces, a potion of climbing, and a potion of water breathing. The dead explorer had a leather pouch on its belt containing a much more modest 35 gold pieces.

Missions/Quests Completed

After some delays, the Heirs managed to track down Ovostask's second lair.

Character(s) interacted with

The Heirs struggled against the antiques of Jever Babblefen before getting an audience with Ovostask. After hearing him out, they accepted his quest.

Notes

  • Helga spent the three days experimenting with Jever and contributing to each other's designs.
  • The body of the dwarven explorer was much newer than most of the other bodies, only being a decade old at most.
  • Three sepulchers were occupied by the bodies of Borgol the Old, Gharin Orc-Doom, and Numik the Unlucky. Their remains were left undisturbed.
  • It was reasoned, by Orreft, that the orcs previously owned the lizard, and they were putting it out of its misery. The troglodytes actually owned the lizard.
