Hawk of the Lady Torandar Giantsbane

Hawk of the Lady (a.k.a. The Giantsbane)

Torandar radiates a very imposing aura. He is always calm and collect, and this will be apparent even when he is conveying a threat. While his reputation precedes him as one of the greatest warriors on Toril, Torandar will seek other methods of resolving conflict when dealing with Humans and demi-humans, including the Drow and Duergar. He relies on the threat of his presence to persuade those not of orcish, goblinkind, or giants that the last thing on their agenda should be a fight with the Hawk of the Lady. Any creature known to be evil that dares cross the path of the Giantsbane can be assured a quick and merciful death.   Normally, Torandar is cheerful and compassionate, but the blood, war, and cruelty he has witnessed has turned him into a cynic. He does not allow this to darken his image of the world, and he strives to improve the lives of all good and wild creatures on Toril.
If ever there was a mortal that received the ire of a god, it was Hawk of the Lady, Torandar Giantsbane. This particular mortal became the quarry of The Beastlord after his vicious followers The People of the Blackblood cast a powerful ritual to summon the avatar of Malar, so that Faerun, and the High Forest in particular could be rid of the threat of Torandar. The summoning came at a great cost in blood, and the People sacrificed many wemics and lions to call the avatar forth. Malar was pleased at the sacrifice, but he was angered at the People of the Black Blood for calling him forth for such a purpose, as they should be able to hunt one mortal. Malar demanded the new Bloodmaster torn to shreds before he would hunt. When Malar was appeased, he took to the forest and began his hunt for the Hawk of the Lady. Malar caught his scent instantly, and pursued with his wolves.   Torandar Giantsbane did not know what lied in store, for he was out enjoying the dusk of the High Forest. Then all insects, animals, and beasts went quiet. The trees themselves seemed to whisper to Torandar. The Ranger of Mielikki heared foot steps and turned round; there he saw the White Stag, an image he had not seen since he was a child, but one that warned him of danger so many years before, and saved him from the beasts of the forest.   Torandar, the greatest mortal hunter was going to give the God of the Hunt a challenge. There was little time, and Torandar hoped he could build traps quick enough. There was little time, and Torandar hoped that he could fool even the God of the Hunt.   Malar knew that something was amiss, for normally the animals of the forest stay clear of his hunt. This time, the beasts of the forest attacked and harassed his fiendish wolves. Celestial Falcolns and owls swooped from the trees to blind them and eat their eyes. Celestial bears crashed through the forest to rend them. Even celestial voles and shrews loosened the ground so the wolves would break limb. Finally the Celestial Wolves howled to challenge them.   Some of Malar's wolves succumbed to traps set by the Hawk of the Lady, while others succumbed to animals their equal. Malar swatted the animals of the forest away like gnats, refusing to slow as his pack diminished. Malar's hunt continued with his pack leader, tracking Mielikki's chosen unerringly.   Torandar, lead Malar through the high forest, past where he decimated The Blood Eye Splinters orc tribe, past where he slayed Elaacrimalicros the Great Green Wyrm of the High Forest, past spots where he lay with Dryads and Nymphs. He headed for the Star Mounts, near where he battled Klauth in the mountains where flows the source of the Unicorn Run. There he made his stand.   The Hawk of the Lady drew Tenefelora 'The Hope of the Woodlands' in his right hand, and held Jorunbrandr the Bane of Giants in his left. The spear he wielded since a child was strapped to his back. The howling of Malar's demon-wolf resonated through the path. The mighty Tiger, Ranthambaur, who waited with Torandar said a final goodbye and charged ahead.   Ranthambaur pounced upon the demon-wolf, and though the wolf had the power of demons he was no match for the mighty jaws of Ranthambaur. With a final baying, the demon-wolf broke beneath the mighty Tiger's claws. Malar turned and threw his unholy spear at the mighty panther, ending the life of one of the most noble beasts the forest ever knew.   Malar charged forward through the path, near the heart of the Star Mounts. There he saw his quarry. Malar raged at the hunter's arrogance, and defiant countenance. The forest and mountains recoiled from Malar.   Torandar saw the Beastlord charge, and triggered his trap. In his rage the Beastlord fell for the hunters trick, and the logs fell from the mountain, with the rubble. The avalanche sealed them in.   Malar fought with tooth and claw, Torandar with blade. Torandar calm, Malar Raged. The battle carried long, and Malar worried, for this mortal should have died in minutes. They both weakened. Torandar was seeing white and stars and Malar. Then he saw the White stag again. It was watching from a mountaintop. Torandar dropped the mighty Hope of the Woodlands and drew his spear. Malar growled in victory, and set to lunge. Then the beastlord saw red, and smelled blood. Torandar thrust his spear in the gullet of the avatar of hunters. Malar felt his divine power leaving back to the Land of the Hunt in Carceri. Rage suffocated him as the impossible crushed him.   Torandar let go of the spear and thrust the Hope of the Woodlands into the flesh covered maw of the Beastlord. Divine blood burned the armour and flesh of the hunter. All that was left, was the Naked hunter and his weapons.   Malar's avatar lay lifeless.

Personal history

Torandar's recent background is legendary. The time before he met Sir Sterling forming the Silver Dragon Mercenaries is unknown to most sages, though if asked he would certainly reveal his origins to anyone that asked. Nearly 300 years ago he was born as the seventh son to a farmer in Tethyr. His sister, when he was born noticed a birthmark upon the right side of his neck; this was the sign of the Tarakion, a legendary race of High Humans.   His parents did not know what this meant, for none of their other children had a mark such as this. It resembles a sigil or a symbol of some kind. Torandar's independent streak started to bloom when he was 8 years old. The young boy decided to impress his family by finding and bringing to the table the impressive White Stag which was the talk of all the hunters in the area. No one before was able to track it, and even gaining sight of the stag was rare. Torandar did not let this stop him, he journeyed into the forest in search of the White Stag.   After only three hours of huntingthe boy was spotted by an orc who must have thought the young boy would be an easy catch. The orc ambushed him, but Torandar showed no fear, took a deep breath, and held his spear straight out towards the orc. The fact the boy was not terrified angered the orc, and the orc charged. Torandar shut his eyes as he awaited the end, and heard a violent crash. When he dared to open his eyes he saw that same orc in front of him, but this time the orc was impaled upon the antlers of a great White Stag. This was Torandar's first bond with the wilderness.   A year after this at age 10, a fencing master named Walter Redsteel saw great potential in him when he was seeking shelter at the farm. He asked permission to train the boy and Torandar signed on as his apprentice in the large metropolis of Zazzespur. There Torandar learned the ways of the blade, and of culture, as he was also employed as a servant to Redsteel. Torandar studied with Redsteel for six years, before he decided on a visit home.   Torandar was very excited to see his family again, all 6 of his brothers and his 3 sisters, his immediately eldest sister especially. The entire journey from Zazzespur was filled with anticipation and excitement until he got close to the farm. That is whent the dread set in. Instead of the beautiful welcoming home he left, he was met with a burning carcass of a farm, the victim of bloody carnage. The corpses of his family were strewn about, the livestock slaughtered and left to rot in the fields. All around him was the results of needless violence. Though he was a but a youngster, he felt as if he could have prevented this.   Torandar dropped the rapier for the spear, and took to the wood, swearing death to the orcs he met from this day forward. He taught himself woodcraft and adapted his skill with the rapier to the longsword. For years, his only friends were the creatures of the wood and the occasional traveler that needed a guide.   It was a fateful day when he met a band of travelers that seemed to have a unique presence. There was nothing odd about them, but he noticed a young man dressed in black and silver, wearing a black, wide brimmed hat with a large, shiny silver plume. He also had an amazing rapier that caught the ranger's eye though it had been nearly a decade since he used one. With him was a heavily armored woman, a priestess of Tempus named Lady Stroma. Torandar introduced himself and made conversation. The man introduced himself as Sir Sterling a well renowned duelist (though in truth he had not made a name for himself). The conversation turned to fencing and Sir Sterling challenged him to a duel. Torandar accepted, and the young duelist defeated him in combat. As a condition of his defeat, Sir Sterling asked that Torandar travel with them, and the ranger agreed.   Their travels took them to a small village of Tethyr. There they spotted a Dark elf being tied upside down to two crossed pieces of wood by the town guard. Torandar challenged and defeated all of the guards, and then demanded the dark elf be freed. Why Torandar did this is probably unknown even to him. The drow introduced himself as Anja N' a' Lespit from the Underdark city of Rilauven. The companions accepted Anja into their ranks, and they formed the Legendary Company of the Silver Dragon.   The rest is all legend.
