KWN.3.6 Champions of Everlund

Session Preface

As the Grandmaster's words reverberate across the gargantuan arena, a hush falls over the crowd. The dirt pit ahead of trembles as the illusionary magic takes hold over your senses, the ground hardening into jagged rock. You rise on a pillar of stone jutting into the air until you are level with the audience that watches with bated breath. The air flickers in waves. Sweat breaks out against your skin as the temperature reaches a scorching heat. Steam rises, drifting in your vision. The remaining dirt floor beneath you is overtaken by a bubbling molten lava that menacingly sloshes against the scattered layer of stone paths below.
Across from you, the Order of the Mutants stand, waiting. Gerron watches the scene unfold, his eyes darting hastily as you observe his own considerations of potential tactics. Arcurth smiles next to him with a sense of nonchalance, running his thumb along the edge of his waraxe. The two blond twins stand directly behind, seemingly unbothered or unaware of their shifting surroundings.

Session Summary

The final round commences with the heroes standing their ground and challenging the Monster Slayers to approach them. Arcurth bellows across the gaps with a brute strength while Gerron nimbly leaps from pillar to pillar. Once within range, Gerron temporarily overwhelms Tristain's will, causing him to strike Masterbreaker, but Tristain resists further manipulations. While the melee fighters position themselves, Pax uses his longbow to start weakening the deviant twins who both stand twitching unnaturally across the arena. Upon rendering one of them unconscious, Pax watches in disgust as the young boy transforms into a mutilated ghastly figure of ash-color skin and exposed veins with flails at the end of their arms. With unnatural speed, the create leaps across the gaps, closing the distance between itself and the Avengers. A tense battle ensues as the lava rises, closing off paths in the arena, forcing the two teams into tighter quarters. In a turning of the tide, Gerron is the first to fall when Tristain channels his divine energy and paralyzes the Blood Hunter, opening opportunities for Aethuriel and Masterbreaker to weaken him before pushing him into the lava, where he falls unconscious and is removed from the bout.
As Pax focuses on the transformed twins, he discovers with horror their additional transformed states, the second of which takes the form of a basilisk-esqe winged creature with oozes boils of blood and ichor. Once this form is weakened further, matters turn darker as it once again disfigures and reforms into a monster resembling a wyvern, with a horrific bloody whip in the place of a stinger. The party manage to defeat the first of the monstrous twins while simultaneously dealing with Arcurth, but not before Masterbreaker is knocked out of the fight. As the lava rises the the final threshold, the Knights find themselves nearly defeated against the last remaining wyvern-eqse form, but with their combined efforts and last surges of will and grit, bring down the final combatant.
As the lava laps at their feet, the arena illusion dissipates and gives way once again to the mundane dirt floor from only moments prior. The visage of the Grandmater appears overhead, this time joined by their own illusory appearances as he congratulates the Avengers on their victory and names them to first ever Champions of Everlund. The party share in their excitement, Pax chestbumping Tristain and Masterbreaker offering a rare humorous exchange on their way back to the waiting rooms to recover prior to the Champion's Ceremony.
