Gauntlgrym

Silver halls and mithral doors
Stone walls to seal the cavern
grander sights than e'ere before
In smithy, mine, and tavern
  Toil hard in endless night
In toast, oh, lift your flagon!
Ye'll need the drink to keep you right
At the forge that bakes the dragon.
Come Delzoun, come one and all
Rush to grab yer kin
And tell 'em that their home awaits
In grandest Gauntlgrym!

Major Locations

Natural Cave Complex

Even with guidance, navigating the labyrinth network of naturally formed caves leading to the grand entrance of Gauntlgrym is challenging. Many portions taper off to narrow crevices where single-file profile squeezing through spaces is the only way forward. Where the caves open up, one often find winding ledges and deep underground rivers underfoot. Mysterious lichen and mushrooms act as dim and colorful lights in the total darkness of the undermountain. But even so, there is a perpetual warmth ahead that subtly guides you closer and closer to the center of the mountain and the legendary city and forges therewith-in.

City Gates

As the seemingly never-ending winding cave formations finally widen out into a central chamber, your attention is immediately drawn to a massive mithral door. Carved to depict an abstract dwarven face, you can't help but feel as its eyes watch you, weighing your worth.

Vault of Kings

Proceeding through the breathtakingly massive chamber, each column you pass is carved of a bright iron depicting ancient leaders of the grand dwarven kingdom of Delzoun. Though many of their legacies have been lost to time beyond these halls, oral traditions and songs of their great deeds live on in the memories and hearts of dwarves across Faerun.

Moradin's Throne Room

Walking through the next massive stone doorway, the vaulted ceiling rises higher still as the hallway opens into a throne room. Golden stairs lead from the end of the walkway up to a golden throne adorned with massive gems of every hue. Torchlight from around the stone chamber bounces off the radiant stairs and throne, casting chromatic splashes like of light across the hall.   Atop the throne, sits Bruenor Battlehammer, King of Gauntlgrym. Even sitting on his throne, the king wears full plate armor, polished but notably worn from battle. His two shoulder pieces serve as the only ornament, two lions faces roaring in either direction. His bright red hair falls around his face, with his long mustache and beard is woven into a trifold knot and tied off at the end.

Iron Tabernacle

Situated at the heart of the city proper, the Iron Tabernacle is Gauntlgrym's temple and much more. Covering a huge area that includes several cathedrals to the gods of dwarven pantheon, the expansive complex is adorned with numerous statues and craftsmen installations. The central hub of all minecart activity from in and out of the city passes through the Iron Tabernacle's first subterranean level, acting as a central hub. In the lowest portion of the Iron Tabernacle rest the crypts of ancestors whose ghosts protect the remains from any who might not show due respect to the dead.

The Great Forge

The complex array of parts and pieces of the machines at work hiss and hum and roar through the massive open workspace. Dozens of dwarves toil away, tempering metal, shaping weapons, and drawing from below the necessary magma to keep the forge alight. Each component of each piece a masterpiece to itself, perfectly formed and maintained for the task it serves within the greater machinations throughout the forge.

Maegara's Fiery Pit

The heat in the dense underground air meets your face well before the magical cart stops moving. When it finally reaches the end of the track, coming to an abrupt halt, your skin is already drenched with sweat. Making your way through the roughly carved circular stone pathway, the orange-red glow of the magma lights the way forward several minutes before you ever see the opening. Upon arriving at the opening into the next chamber.

Minor Locations

The Sleeping Anvil: The tavern of choice witih Gauntlgrym. The signpost outside reads, "Get Hammered and Get Ye Rest...in either order ye'd like!" The tavern is a round stone tower, with several arched windows and dwarf-wrought furniture. It contains a large brass countertop and very few tables and chairs, obviously accustomed to standing room only bustling business at the shift change hours.
