Noteworthy Locations

Court of Air

An expansive courtyard of cobblestone that stands between the gatehouse and the emerald door and welcomes all who wish to study Candlekeep's riches of knowledge but will not be joining the avowed within the Inner Ward.   House of Rest
The three-story bunkhouse that provides seekers with a place to rest and store their belongings. The accommodations are rustic and include both private and communal rooms. The premises offer guests peace and quiet, sending noisy guests along to The Hearth instead.   The Hearth
Though appearing as a modest but sturdy tavern from the outside, it is at least three times more spacious than it seems once inside. Warm light eminates from small windows on either side of the front door. Overhead, an intricate clockwork device is suspended within a crystal orb that faintly slows above the bar, known as a geometric amplifer. In addition to the bar, patrons can find tables with chairs or benches as well as a dozen soft, cushy archairs that encircle the large fireplace in the center of the chamber. Extending from the central hall are a number of doors leading to private meeting chambers or one of the shrines to Candlekeep's most venerated deities - Deneir, God, and Milil.   Bath & Steam House
Spacious rooms within this mosaic adorned building contain heated pools as well as side chambers for hot saunas and massage parlors.   House of the Binder
Filled with desks, this workshop is where seekers can request books or scrolls to be copied by members of the Avowed. The time and financial cost vary greatly by the work and the magical nature of the text. The scribes require that the entire text be copied to preserve scholarly integrity.   Pillars of Pedagogy / Necessariums
A series of closely huddled, flat-topped towers of varrying heights where seekers can engage in quiet study and research. Private rooms are reserved with permanent silence enchantments maintained on them. Seekers using these rooms are afforded the aid of Avowed guides to retrieve and return works from the Great Library.   Temple of Oghma
A modest stone temple in comparison to the towers of the Great Library. A large bronze bell sounds to announce the beginning of services. Four stone gargoyles perch protectively over the church. Lorekeeper Kei Tigersteel oversees the temple and its gatherings.   Erudite Outfitters & Clothiers
Managed by Feldmar Bisset III, this simple shop is where Avowed and Seekers alike can acquire new robes or have well-worn clothes mended. Feldmar also maintains an atrium next to his workshop where he indulges in his hobby of raising silkworms and harvesting their cocoons to weave silk for more delicate projects.   Smithy and Stables
Khe'ril and his apprentices manage the stables while also producing shoes for the mounts and other modest crafts in the smith. Specialized stalls for hippogriffs, griffons, and wvyerns are maintained as well.   Emerald Door
The entryway to the Inner Ward at the western edge of the Court of Air. Fifteen feet tall and composed of a translucent, shimmering dark green stone that glows with an inner light. At all times, an Avowed, the Keeper of the Emerald Door, stands to welcome newly arrived seekers. Runners and aides help accomodate the guests with securing lodging and rooms in the Pillars of Pedagogy. The Keeper also ensures the seekers do not expect to enter the Great Library directly without a special dispensation from one of Candlekeep's highest authorities.

Inner Ward

Beyond the Emerald Door, a veritable forest of stone towers stand alongside stockier buildings and the high-walled citadel of Exaltation.   Great Library
The Great Library is an eclectic combination of towers that were transported or teleported from across the continent and painstakingly rebuilt into a collection of architectural styles and engineering achievements. The materials vary as much as the style and size, from the yellow granite of neighboring Baldur's Gate to strange infernal metals and the bones of a long-dead colossal red dragon. The oldest of the library buildings are of more mundane stone materials but soar highest in the sky. The Avowed use floating disks to move through the space and reach the highest shelves. Well-traveled areas are lit with perpetual magic glows and driftglobes are used in the less frequented corners of the library. An intricate array of mirrors mounted throughout the towers brighten the libraries with reflected sunlight, casting a natural warmth over many of the commonly used chambers. A handful of modrons can also be found catalogging and shelving books.   Exaltation
Home to the Avoved, Exaltation is a heavily fortified bastion and the tallest structure in Candlekeep. The halls of Exaltation serve a multiude of purposes from classrooms, kitchens, bakeries, dining halls, shrines, workshops, offices, study halls, scriptoriums, and dormitories. Bells are rung throughout the citadel to start routines, signal mealtimes, end the day, and denote the changing of guards at the Emerald Door and eastern gatehouse.   The Grove
A small outcropping of trees growing a variety of fruits and small fields where vegetables and grains are maintained and harvested to feed the Avowed along with the imported goods from neighboring communities.

Beneath Candlekeep

  The Vaults
Legend has it that there are great vaults filled with texts and treasures of great value guarded by an ancient dragon that once saught to add Candlekeep's riches to her own hoard.   The Catacombs
The burial home for members of the Avowed to fulfill their lifelong pledge to serve and defend Candlekeep and the invaluable riches of lore and knowledge contained within.   The Caves
It is said in caverns deep beneath the citadel, a chamber exists where high-ranking members of the Avoewed descend and commune with spirits of long-dead sages that are willing to share their insights and knowledge from beyond the grave.
