Session 32 - Dragon's Lair

General Summary

The group is outside the ziggurat and they talk about options. After discussing it for a while, the mages point out that they could return to Llorkh, prevision up, then scry and teleport to the next spot. They don't want to say it is guaranteed, especially not in the final place, but it let's them gain some information. The party agrees to this and heads back to the town.  
  Benny gets a list of items to try and find. It turns out they want some high quality items, except for the spacious sack, which they can find. The rest of the items are more powerful than what local people can make. They will have to make the item themselves or find them. He also gets some cure potions, a cure wand, and a wand to keep the horses protected from the elements.   Jakahaiel spends a day in the library doing research on what the pit fiend and balor weaknesses are and what they need. From that, they get a list of things they want made and Benny takes care of getting those commissioned.   Joice checks on Sandor to find out what happened with him. Sandor is okay and glad that he can tell them he is fine. Joice asks more questions, though, and soon Joice is suspicious. While Sandor is not out and out lying, he is definitely avoiding several topics and not telling everything. Joice thanks him and tries not to warn him, saying they are leaving anyway.   Zephry describes what is seen in the scrying vision at the first location and they get ready for that.  
     They get a good rest then gather with all of their gear. They teleport.   As the teleport spell finishes, Nilgan yells, "Shit!"   The group again feels this horrible wrenching feeling as they teleport.   We arrive in a room, with a long sinuous purple dragon with no wings at the other end. It looks pissed.   "Those fools…I told them I would kill the next creatures they sent here! What are you doing here?"  
  “Who sent us to you?” yells Jakahaiel.   “We mean you no harm!” calls out Zephyr.       "I said no more! Why won't you listen!"   “We are not with those who you think.” Answers Jakahaiel. You are in my lair. I will not let you leave with this information!   “Who do you believe sent us? It was not our intention to come here.” Says Jakahaiel, trying to get through to the dragon. Meanwhile, the party has been busy.  
  Zephyr casts “Haste” on the party…while murmuring “oh crap” to himself. He casts a hallucination that another dragon appeared approach from the east. The idea is for the fake dragon to ask the real dragon to be at peace and let us go about our way.   The dragon looks to the east, sees the creature, and then towards the party, and the dragon illusion suddenly disappears as the dragon makes his save.   Joice casts “Lend, greater judgement” giving Benny Destruction and Justice. Justice is +6 to confirm a critical. He then casts Prayer on the party.   Thimansl starts singing about our deeds. Her song has stories she must have picked up in town about our exploits. Her singing gives the group Inspire Courage +7 to attacks and saves vs. fear. She then slides over to Rivenn and says “Hey, you want improved invisibility?” He accepts.   Jakahaiel performs an abundant step, and dimension doors closer to the dragon, 135’ away. Suddenly, a huge weight drops on him as he tries to teleport in an area with a teleport trap. He throws off the pain with a fortitude save, but it was like there was a backlash of magic and he takes 16 points of force damage from using the teleport.  
  When he lands, Jakahaiel calls out “It wasn’t our intention to come here. Who do you think sent us? We will fight if we need to!”   "I DON'T CARE!" cries out the dragon in a paniced anguish.   So Jakahaiel begins punching the dragon. Fist after fist lands as he pummels the large creature. Only one attack misses, but the dragon looks in good health. Needs a 41 to hit.   Nilgan saw Jakahaiel have issues using his dimensional stepping, so he calls out after witnessing “don’t use teleportation. Jakahaiel just took damage when doing that!”  
  The dragon turns on Jakahaiel. Two claw swipes and a tail slap land, but the bite misses as he attacks the monk. Then a fear affects rolls across the room, and frightened people must flee and can’t move closer to the source of the fear as long as we can see it. A few members make the save against the fear and are only Shaken. And then Sens uses a Lair effect against Jakahaiel, who feels magic coming towards him even as Jakahaiel is able to shrug it off.  
  Benny moves away from the party, but not closer to the dragon in his frightened form. He pulls out the wand and shoots. Unfortunately, it’s the wand of invisibility, and it bounces off the dragon. Cursing to himself, Benny then pulls out the wand of Enervation he wanted to use, and activates it at teh dragon. The beam shoots out, and Benny is surprised as it penetrates the dragon’s Spell Resistance. Suddenly, blood appears on the dragons scales from the attacks from Jakahaile, as the wand manages to get through and gave the dragon 2 negative levels! The loss of levels mean the damage Jakahaiel caused now is visible.  
  Rivenn calls upon Maliki and wants to summon an elemental to assist Jakahaiel. Suddenly, he hears a voice in his mind as Maliki responds to him. Only he can hear, but he nods his head, accepting her gift as a huge ice elemental step out of a portal and is facing the dragon. Not knowing it was from Rivenn, Jakahaiel whispers “shit….” Seeing that spell succeed, he then calls upon Maliki to summon a cheetah to assist the ice elemental.   The ice elemental uses flanking to attack the dragon with a numbing cold attack. His arm swings out, but bounces off the dragon’s scales. A claw reaches out again, and again misses. The cheetah tries to attack, and bites and claws at the dragon. Even landing on it’s back doesn’t seem to do anything to the armored creature, but does somehow the cheetah manages to scratch the dragon a bit!  
  Another lair action goes off, as the dragon sinks his claws into the ground and breaths into it. The breath shoots out from the ground and hits the party standing there. Only Benny who moved away is not impacted. The people in the area make a reflex save to dodge the cloud of fire erupting from the very ground at their feet. Joice/Rivenn/& Nilgan all manage to twist and only take half of the fire damage.   As an immediate action, Jakahaiel takes an immovable rod and places it above the dragon’s head, that is currently in the dirt breathing fire. He lands in a perfect spot and places the rod. In theory, the dragon’s head is pinned in place!   Shadowfury moves away from the party, but not very far as he’s been hit with fire and is frightened.   Zephyr drinks a potion of healing. He then casts a cloud-kill in the area where the dragon is. He pours into the cloud kill the essence of delirium to make the dragon confused. The cloud appears around him, and his face is held under the ground and he makes save against both the poison and the delirium. So then Zephyr drinks another potion of cure moderate.
Joice, seeing his party frightened, decides to do a “reverse” dazzling display. He is going to bane his weapon against dragons. And then do a dazzling display, that is normally a demoralizing effect, but instead, make it and inspiring effect using the power of the great Nicholas. Suddenly, the party is inspired, and instead of being frightened, they are now shaken!   
  Joice then performs a double move running across the length of the cavern, ending with a final yell and a charge at the dragon! As the sword comes down, it suddenly flashes brightly in a firey glow and blood flows everywhere as it rips into the dragon up to the hilt! As the dragon is bloodied and roars, everyone standing around the dragon takes 20 points of fire damage as the blood flung into the air burns with an infernal heat. The cheetah bursts into flames and is gone.     Thimansl heals up the group with a mass cure moderate wound. Only Zephyr is out of range to be healed. She then continues with her song.   Jakahaiel as a free action pulls out a cure critical potion and drinks it. Gaining 34 points of healing, he attacks the dragon. Three punches, all three land. His next three punches fly out and two of them manage to land with one fist sliding off the scales. His third flurry of blows go off, and he again manages to strike the dragon all three times. His fourth fury of blows goes out, and punch after punch lands. And suddenly, the dragon drops to the ground.  
  Suddenly, the lair action goes off. As the dragon dies, the entire area is flooded with magic out of the dragon. It rolls over everyone in the party. Nobody makes save. All spell effects are gone except the bard’s song as she sings through the energy.   You have killed one of my children. I curse all of you!!! Says a voice that sounds like it came from the dragon’s god. And all of us take a curse as the energy fills the cavern. Joice attempts to lessen the curse from the dragon’s plane. A voice echoes in his head. Everyone is cursed: -4 to saves, skills, attacks, and ability checks.   The party heals up while Benny searches the Lair.  Zephyr uses his poison knowledge and decides to takes some dragon blood. It isn’t poisonous, but it would be beneficial for fire resistance or for fire-based spells.   Benny finds a secret door and tries to disable the lock. It suddenly opens revealling a long hallway with several rooms off the sides. There were several minor traps that Benny disabled without thinking.  There are seven rooms off the hallway, having coins, magic items, mundane items...just lots and lots of items. He takes his time looking while the party is doing their thing.   
  Suddenly, Rivenn calls out "Hey, where's Benny!"  He calls them over to the area he is in, and Rivenn is not happy about Benny wandering off. But then they look at all the items in the rooms, and the dragon hoard, and a momentary hush falls over the group.   GM Notes
  • I think the dragon fight might have too easy. This is what I like about having critiques as I'm reminded that if the dice had gone another way or if they hadn't had buffs, it would have been a different fight.
  • I don't like giving out abilities and then not letting the players use them. It's part of the fun!
  • I had to tell the players how what they spent on just one of their potions was the same as a commoners yearly salary. I just wanted them to have that perspective about how far they have come from where they started.

    Scattered among the rooms are many books and tomes.   Some of the are diaries and not all of them are from the dragon. In the dragon's diaries, it soon became apparent that he could shape shift into human form and has done so. Entries are scattered about and it will take a detailed dive to get the chronological order sorted.   Some of them are caravan manifests, a few dating back over a hundred and fifty years. There are near duplicates in some of the manifests, with one listing less than the other.   There are warehouse manifests from three of the merchant families. These could be used to trace how they got known for the goods and services they offer today.   There are survey results dating back hundreds of years. Then addendums done when the Zhentarim refugees arrived. A few were done as little as twenty years ago.   There are magistrate records and declarations from the rules going back several hundred years as well. One of the benefits that the Zhentarim brought was how to keep records as the time after they arrived, the records are much easier to read and follow.
