Kim Namjoon was born on September 12, 1994 in Seoul, South Korea. His mother died in childbirth and so he grew up in an orphanage for most of his childhood. Even when he was really young, he would spend most of his time at libraries or PC Cafes and he taught himself coding. He hacked into a government database and found out about Bulletproof Guardian Security and ended up being recruited. After becoming friends with Jung Hoseok and learning he was a mage, he helped recruit him as well.
