Hatching Day

Every mole is born one day. Some say this is the most important day in their life. Of course, if it wasn’t for the day they’ve been born, they never would have been alive. Because this is such an important occasion in one’s life, parents like to celebrate it by throwing a big hatching party where they invite all of their friends and family. Moles don't really tend to celebrate their birthdays, but the actual day of their birth must be celebrated.

But - Where do little moles come from?

As we all know, moles are hatched from the eggs. A woman will carry this egg inside of her for a time, but lay it just in time before it gets too big and too uncomfortable. After that she will care for the egg until it’s time for it to hatch. She will keep it warm and make sure it doesn’t get damaged. Damaged egg would most certainly only result in the death of the little mole baby.

When the egg is ready to hatch, the parents have to be the one to free the baby from the egg. You see little moles don't have beaks or anything that would help them get out, like birds do for example, so they need help from their parents.

Hatching Day Party

When the baby is hatched, the parents will throw the party to celebrate this important day with their loved ones. People mainly do this in two different ways: some will have the party on the day of the hatching, and the hatching of the egg will be part of the event, and others prefer to hatch the egg the day before in private, and throw the party the next day when the baby is more ready for attention.

The party will mainly revolve around the new baby in the family. Parents will introduce the baby to their family and announce the baby’s name. Though parents should be more or less ready for the little buddy and have all they need to take care of him, the guests will bring more gifts for the baby and the parents.

Like any mole celebration, this party will involve a lot of food and probably last late into the night, way past the baby’s bedtime. That’s ok though, that way the adults will still have some time to have fun together any way they want, before starting the full responsibility of being a parent the next day.

Ceremonial Hatching

No matter if the parents decide to hatch the egg at the party or the day before, this is an important ceremony. For the egg to be hatched, the parents need to carefully break it at the top with a ceremonial hatching spoon. This spoon has to be large enough to break the egg, but besides that it can look any way the parents want it to. There are cheaper options, of course, but many don't mind spending some extra money to get a really fancy custom made hatching spoon. Rich families will especially like to use a spoon made of pure silver (and particularly ornate in other ways as well, of course) - that's where the phrase "being born with a silver spoon" comes from.

Each baby gets his own hatching spoon. Even if the couple has more children later or twins at the same time, it would be very inappropriate to have the children share the spoon. To make the spoon more personalized it will more often than not be engraved with the baby's name, and date when they were hatched.
