Shujae Halflings

Shujae Halflings (or "stout" halflings) are a race of small humanoids from Jisrima. They are one of a variety of tiny people, all from this region. Much of their population was scattered to the winds after the Treaty of Jisrima was written. The Shujae are those that remained in Jisrima, eventually gaining independence. They are more stout then their the other halflings due to the mixing of their population with that of dwarves.

Naming Traditions

Other names

Halflings typically have 4 names. The first name is their given name, given to them during their birth or naming ceremony. The second name is the given name of their father with the suffix "bin" or "bint" meaning "son of" or "daughter of." The third name is the given name of their mother, also with the suffix of "bin" or "bint." The fourth name is the name of their community, or where they are from. This may change if they begin to associate with a different community. For example, a halfling may be named Arumo Laricbin Isaribin Kommuru. If they eventually move to Allur, and find more of a connection with them, then they might change their name to Arumo Laricbin Isaribin Allur.

Culture

Culture and cultural heritage

Many halflings have a culture of politeness, respect, propriety, and tradition. They are fiercely proud of their homes, regardless of what style it might be, and can make anyone who is welcome inside feel comfortable. They would never try and disrespect anyone, and are content to live in their private communities away from excitement and drama. They enjoy simple community games with clear rules, the occasional community gathering, and festivities that are well organized and planned.

Common Etiquette rules

Halflings in general have a strong sense of etiquette and it is easy to offend or be considered rude by a halfling, though they would never call you out on such manners. This can be as simple as waiting till everyone is seated before eating, keeping all non food items off the table (such as weapons or keys), respecting your elders, being punctual, not stopping by places uninvited, never touch another halflings pipe, no discussion of politics, money or religion at a table or public setting, wallways bring baked goods when visiting someone, using proper titles such as "master," etc.

Common Dress code

Halflings have conservative, and formal style of dress. You are not considered fully dressed without a headscarf or hat, a vest, or a jacket in cool weather. They tend to have simple well patterned or embroidered clothing that are of basic colors. It is never polite to show too much skin, even in the warm climate of Jisrima.

Art & Architecture

Shujae halflings live in groves of the Kethab Steppe in most places, in small tree houses connected together and stacked outward to fit extended families. Those that do not live inside these treehouses, or are growing trees to place there homes in, will often live in temporary "yurts." The Cities and villages are usually a combination of connected treehouses, palisades, wooden houses, yurts, and pueblos. Halflings tend to be flexible and proud of their homes, keeping them tidy and neat regardless of structure.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

Halflings have a famous food culture of variety, rich flavors, and stout beer. With their food culture, they also have strict schedules, with breakfast, brunch, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, and supper, and a late night beer and a smoke. Naptime is between lunch and afternoon tea, meaning most shops are closed for each of these meals, and for nap time, making it often difficult for outsiders to know when a shop might be open in halfling communities. Almost all cultures regard halflings as having the best foods, and being the best cooks.

Birth & Baptismal Rites

Halflings will typically have a "name day" ceremony where people bring foods for a potluck style picnic. This is usually around the child is 1 year of age, when the parents have grown to like a specific name for the child. The name day ceremony is typically also the child's first birthday where the name is officially transcribed in family and community documents.

Coming of Age Rites

Halflings will typically host a 20th birthday party for themselves which is a community potluck, often accompanied by music and a lot of beer. Their ability to host and plan such an event is often a cause for great scrutiny, and says a great deal about how well they were raised in halfling culture. After this birthday, they are typically considered adults. Halflings will continue to live with their parents, however, until they marry.

Funerary and Memorial customs

Halflings have well cared for cemeteries where they keep small shrines to their dead. This is often in the form of a tombstone with incense and maintained flowers. When a halfling dies, they will typically make their goodbyes in a public ceremony, say kind words and tell stories of the dead, before laying them to rest. Halflings will typically avoid discussing matters any further, and will do subtle solitary things (such as maintaining a grave) to honor lost ones. But talking of the dead is considered very rude.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Shujae halflings tend to have middle to dark skin tones, dark hair, and large green to brown eyes. They tend to favor curves, with round bellies for men and wide hips for women. Weight is a display of wealth, and wide hips is a sign of fertility among women. They also favor thick eyebrows, dark eyelashes, and large feet. Large feet is seen as a sign of wisdom and luck.

Gender Ideals

Halflings enjoy simple lives of farming and craftsmanship, with few hunters. Thus men and women typically work together, however when a family has children, it is the women that will stay home and tend to the children while the man is expected to go out and provide. They work together to maintain their homes and do domestic chores. Children are often expected to learn to play independently around 10 or 12, and help out with chores around work 18 to 20, regardless of gender.

Courtship Ideals

Dating is very formal among halflings, and courtships are often chaperoned by parents. The act of courting someone typically requires the blessing of both parents, chaperoned dates, and eventually a formal plea to the council of elders or mayor and both sets of parents of marriage. Marriage is often seen as a bond or vow to each other, and involves a formal ceremony where the two parties commit to a lifelong monogamous relationship. This is usually done via a handfasting ceremony.

Relationship Ideals

In a relationship, women often work until they have children, in which case they may adapt to staying home with children while the husband provides for the family. When the children are around the age of 10 or 12, they are expected to be able to care for and entertain themselves, allowing both family members to return to work, which is most often crafting, farming, or some formal trade. Men and women maintain equal footing as partners in the relationship, doing many domestic tasks such as cooking and cleaning together.
