Highlanders

Highlanders   One of the three barbaric cultures, a sub culture of the Statesmen as they have been absorbed into the society of Tower Rock this is a simple and less civilized folk. Family tartans and kilts often make them stand out among the statesmen not to mention the dominating red hair. A much more aggressive or hot tempered folk the Highlanders are passionate and quick to temper if not outright violence prone. A very proud people they are very reluctant to ask for help but fiercely loyal or devastatingly opposing. Society is divided into clans or families each noted with its own weaving pattern of the woolen tartans. They are crafty hunters and small scale farmers almost self-sufficient as an individual family.   Language (Spoken and written)   The spoken language is really two distinct languages. Everyone speaks trade tong or common with a deep brogue in addition to a difficult to master Goidelic (Gaelic/Pictish). Both can and do have distinct accents based on clan or family. The written language uses the Atlantian alphabet although the written form of Goidelic often looks very different from the way the word is pronounced.   Literature (Fiction, Non-fiction, educational, historical)   Literature is fairly rare among this culture but a few things exist. Short fictional stories exist mostly promoting clan or family laws, heroes or general life lessons. Accounts of history are also focused on clan and family. Educational books are a little more numerous and focus plainly on basic literature, mathematics and history. Most schooling is responsible per the clans rather than the society as a whole. Lastly the most focused books are general tomes teaching trade work. The most rare form of book though is something written in Goidelic and they focus on clan history and genealogy.   Music   Music focuses on lutes, harps, small deep sounding drums and singing, particularly the female voice. A small flute is sometimes included as influenced by the Epirus Empire. The tempo is often fast and fun or slow and haunting. The most distinctive form of music though is the pipers. A set of bagpipes used almost exclusively in the field of battle or during ceremonial situations. Often pipers are accompanied into battle with drummers to intimidate the opponents.   Arts (visual, paint, sculpt, carving etc…)   The Highland art focuses on small handmade items. Jewelry of semi-precious stones silver, copper and gold are the primary materials for this. Small statuary often made of bronze, silver or gold mostly depicting the gods or family heroes. Painting is almost exclusively composed on small wooden slabs but a few portraits of clan leaders have been completed on canvas.   Architecture   Compared to the rest of Tower Rock Highland architecture is mostly primitive. Typical homes are single story stacked stone or mortar and stone with thatched roof. Other slightly more refined homes are two story block and lumber while the most advanced structures can be as tall as five stories crafted from stone block and mortar. The refined homes have wood lined walls and even a few whitewashed walls but its rare. Mostly short and squat with little stone decoration but wooden structures are carved and highly decorated. The kitchen hearth is almost always the focal point of the home with a very large table for dining.   Gardens (Agriculture)   Most homes, even in the cities are really small farms. A small barn that houses a cow or two and the horses, a coop with a few chickens or ground endry or even a deer or pig pen cover the typical farm animals. Vegetables such as potatoes, cabbage and squash cover the typical vegetables. The largest farms grow grain for the rest of the population.   Clothing (materials, fashion, colors)   Fashion is not foremost among the Highlanders as they are a very practical folk. Male typically wear the tartan and kilt made of wool. Women can also wear a tartan however its typically longer. Tartans are made of spun wool and each clan or family has a particular pattern of various colors. Shirts are often heavy in the winter and light during the summer. Boots are simple for men often lighter while women more often than not wear a supple leather shoe or sandals. Women’s formal wear is strongly matched to the counterpart of the Statesmen while male formal wear often has a formal cut of the tartan. Armor is typically leather, hide or boiled leather with little metal.   Cuisine   Lamb and sausages are a staple of table meats shored up with various cabbage, potato and squash. Hag Sausage is a common food as it is made up of butchering scrap, organ meats, oats, and spices, packed in cleaned casings. While not the best tasting it is nutritious and life sustaining, when smoked and cooked into a stew or as a meat filler in other meals it is less notable. Hag sausage originated with the Highlanders spreading to the poorest of the Statesmen.   Pets and animals   Sheep farms are the most common for heard animals followed by a distant second of cow then deer. Typical household pets include wolfhounds, falcons or owls and rarely a trained weasel kind of animal.   Religion   This is the theological belief of the barbarians, all barbarians. It is believed animals have the essence of the god they represent, often considered a sub pantheon to The Path, those who follow this religion care for nature and the balance of the man vs wild. There is no hierarchy but most times a single person in a tribe (Druid or shaman) is the sole religious leader of the group. The following list of animal representations is not exhaustive by any means and some tribes add many animals to this list or even narrow it down to a single animal.   Festivals   The festivals celebrated are the same as the Statesmen although it is always with Highlander flair. A tradition at the end of parties is to celebrate the “Parting Glass” and often sing a song of the same name.   Economy (exports, production items etc…)   Highlanders are part of Tower Rock however they do export, the biggest export is wool.   Military   A formal military is almost nonexistent as most clans maintain militias loyal to them. Some families do specialized training such as cavalry, rangers or heavy infantry. Any other military involvement is Highlanders belong to the Tower Rock military formally.
