Giantkin

Giantkin are a varied and often reclusive race of people, with a reputation for a strong sense of honor and justice. Descended from the ancient giants, who are believed by many to be the first inhabitants of the Material Plane, giantkin grow to enormous stature, towering over even the tallest of orcs. Following the traditions of their ancestors, giantkin are powerfully strange and a surprising number of them have magical abilities.
Like their giant ancestors, the giantkin are strongly associated with the four elements, and exhibit different traits depending on the elemental associations of the giant groups from which they descend. Although regular interbreeding between ethnicities has somewhat muddied the differences, broadly speaking, giantkin are divided into six major categories; hillborn, mountainborn, frostborn, fireborn, cloudborn and stormborn.
Hillborn giantkin are the most populous category, partially because the hill giants from which most hillborn giantkin are descended were the most populous variety of giants, and partially because hybrid children from other groups often exhibit traits similar to those of the hillborn. Some choose to distinguish between "true hillborn" giantkin, who are directly descended from hill giant populations, and "mixborn" giantkin.
Hillborn giantkin usually have tan, brown, or black skin, similar to human shades, and are broad-shouldered and powerfully strong. Hillborn giantkin are elementally neutral—unlike other giantkin, they are not associated with one of the four elements. Rather than making them mundane, however, hillborn giants instead have a deep connection to the Material Plane and to souls. Many hillborn giantkin communities have kept alive the millennia-old traditions of their ancestors, strengthening their souls and bodies and capable of wielding impressive amounts of soul magic. They often produce powerful and wise warriors, whose bodies are living weapons.
Mountainborn giantkin are the descendents of stone giants, and are elementally related to the plane of earth. They usually have deep brown or grey skin of various shades, and are the tallest and most powerfully built of the giantkin. Like earth itself, mountainborn giantkin have a reputation for both patience and stubborness, slow to move or to change their minds. Most mountainborn giantkin are completely hairless, and many of them can harden their skin to stone, making themselves impervious to blows.
Frostborn giantkin are descended from frost giants and are linked to the frozen reaches of the plane of water. With skin ranging in color from pale blue or green to pure white, frostborn giantkind blend in well with their chosen surroundings, as most of them live in the far north and far south, in lands where the ground is covered in snow and ice year-round. Many believe frostborn to be cruel and callous, uncaring about who lives and who dies in their frozen wastelands.
Fireborn giantkin are, as their name suggests, descended from the elementally-aligned fire giants. Their skin varies in color from pure, ash-black to brilliant reds and oranges, as does their hair, and their natural body temperature is much higher than that of other giantkin—or, indeed, other races in general. Fireborn giantkin are believed to be quick-tempered and rash, but they are also famed for their excellent metalwork. Most fireborn are resistant to heat and fire damage, and the most skilled among them can pick up glowing hot pokers without injury.
Cloudborn giantkin are descended from the cloud giants, and connected to plane of air. Their skin and hair come in a variety of hues, including purple, blue, green, pink, and yellow, but is almost always pastel or washed-out in appearance. Smaller and slighter than other giantkin, cloudborn are not known for their great strength, but instead for their magical prowess. Possibly the most magically-inclined of the giantkin, many can raise their voices in magical song, and some of them can go intangible when struck, turning to mist. They have a reputation for being flighty and aloof, unconcerned with the trouble their magic might cause.
Stormborn giantkin are the the descendants of storm giants, aligned with both air and water. They usually have dark gray, blue, or purple skin, and pale white or yellow hair. Many of them have the power to call down lightning on their enemies, wielding their element as an incredibly destructive weapon. They have a reputation for thunderous tempers, and have often been accused of being warlike and greedy. Due to many clashes in the past between stormborn giantkin and various groups of people, including both humans and other giantkin, there are relatively few fully stormborn tribes left anymore; most have either been wiped out or absorbed into other tribes of giantkin.
