The Material Plane

For most of those who live in the Material Plane, there is no other world or form of existence. Few even call it the Material Plane - for them it is Ferlausen, the world, or simply "home." This uniqueness makes it unremarkable, because it is all they have ever known.
To those whose origins or travels take them outside the Material Plane, it is either a prison or a locked safe - a secure holding cell from which there is only the slimmest hope of escape, or source of untold riches which keeps itself tightly guarded and whose only key has been lost to the depths of time.
Historically, control of the Material Plane was the primary source of conflict between the inhabitants of the universe's Planar System. Rich in souls, one of the most valuable forms of magical energy, control of the plane and passage to and from the plane was hotly contested. Now, the primary concern of those living outside the Material Plane is how to break back in. Research into how the Material Plane lost its magic is constant, although it can often be dangerous.
From the outside, while floating in the Astral or Ethereal Planes, the Material Plane appears to be enshrouded by an opaque black barrier that shines like glass and sounds hollow when tapped. Known as the Obsidian Wall, it sprang into existence when the Great Arcane Cataclysm occurred and quickly grew until it encompassed the entire plane. Though the exact nature of the Obsidian Wall is undetermined, many speculate that it is a magical barrier put into place to protect the Material Plane from some outside threat - though what that threat might be, and who put it there, remains a mystery.
The Obsidian Wall prevents all normal passage to and from the Material Plane, and deflects nearly all sources of magical energy. However, it does allow magical energy to escape. Nonetheless, this leaves most inhabitants of the Material Plane as mundane beings.

Geography

The Material Plane is one of the larger planes of existence in its local Planar System. It is an abstract dimensional space that encompasses the three-dimensional space which includes the planet Ferlausen, its sun and two moons, and the rest of Ferlausen's solar system, galaxy, and universe, which houses countless other solar systems and galaxies.

Fauna & Flora

Since the Material Plane is so incredibly vast, it would be impossible to enumerate all the flora and fauna which exist in it. Notable creatures include the sentient life forms which inhabit Ferlausen, such as humans, dwarves, and halflings, as well as life forms from other planets, such as the Drudda. Additionally, there are lifeforms that spend the majority of their existence in space, such as the icorsain and the Fmastkobr.

Natural Resources

Possibly the most notable natural resource of the Material Plane is souls. Souls are byproducts of a process in which a living body converts matter into magical energy, and they are an extremely efficient method of storing magical energy. Not all living creatures are capable of soul generation - in fact, it appears to be a talent unique to creatures that are native to the Material Plane. Because they are such an efficient form with which to store magical energy, they are a highly sought-after commodity outside of the Material Plane.
