Lorar Nov

Simply City of Cliffs in Gnomish.   One of the more peaceful places in Ferkathas to live, it is currently seeing some stress due to competing religions.

Demographics by Occupation

The forest-gnomish culture values self-reliance and education. The percentage of full-time farmers is lower than in most civilizations, because so many of the gnomish households eat from their own gardens. The percentage of professional educators is higher than in many civilizations, despite the fact that homemakers here (who are slightly more common than average) do a better-than-normal job of home-schooling their children.   Forest gnomes are slightly more likely than other races to be craftsmen or artisans, being especially famous as skilled jewelers.   The emergence of the Daelist Way, and other religions' competitive response to it, mean that Lorar Nov has more clergy than a typical city of its size.   Illuminators are employed only in select neighborhoods, as the gnomes, elves, and dwarves can see fine in the dark.   Lorar Nov has a slightly smaller-than-typical criminal element, and a smaller number of beggars, thanks mostly to the activity of Denend Charities.   Few people truly retire before they die in Ferkathas, and gnomes in particular generally prefer to stay busy with something in their old age. But a few retired individuals do exist, generally supported by their progeny.   Finally, the gnomes' innate intelligence and magical talents mean a larger portion of the population is in magical services or scholarly pursuits.   The net effect of all these adjustments is as follows:
  • 6042: Children
  • 2970: Homemakers
  • 1098: Ranchers (rancher, poultry raiser, shepherd, animal trainer)
  • 614: Farmers (grain farmer, orchard farmer, gardener, wild fruit gatherer)

  • 348: Service Workers (innkeeper, tavern worker, manservant/maidservant, butler (food-taster), barber, bather, town-crier)
  • 332: Hunters (trappers, hawkers, fisherman)
  • 307: Laborers (construction worker, water-carrier, street cleaner, illuminator, lumberjack)
  • 272: Clergy (clerk, priest, missionary, teacher)
  • 235: Criminals (smuggler, thug, thief, assassin, charlatan, spy)
  • 230: Nobility (statesman/administrator, knight, herald, bureaucrat, dilettante)
  • 163: Merchants (hay, livestock, mercery/textiles, spices, alcohol, fish, furs, magic supplies, baked goods, gadgets)

Geography

Lorar Nov is built on coastal cliffs overlooking the Diedald Ocean, next to the mouth of the River of Gnomes (or "River of Guidance" to the gnomes). Fresh water is mostly drawn from wells, but can be fetched from the river in a pinch with a short hike down the river valley. The city area itself is somewhat hilly and forested.
