Honeycombed Hills
Geography
Surroundings & Relationships
The Honeycombed Hills occupy the southern third of the Foltzhai Forest and extend southward to the coast of the Diedald Ocean, west to the valley of the River of Gnomes, and east to Vaultaung Bay.Features
The northern half of the hills region is heavily forested, overlapping the Foltzhai. The southeastern portion of the hills region comprises Loom Penninsula. In the southwestern corner of the hills region, at the mouth of the River of Gnomes, lies the city of Lorar Nov. In the middle of Loom Penninsula is found the town of Loom.Fauna & Flora
The Hills get their name from the abundance of burrows and small tunnels running through them; burrowing life, cultivated by the forest gnomes, is found here in abundance (including the gnomes themselves). Chipmunks, hedgehogs, rabbits, moles, badgers, weasels, ferrets, and garter snakes abound. Copperhead snakes are somewhat rarer, as the gnomes exterminate them where they can.
The northern half of the Hills, heavily forested, is particularly rich in oak, ash, birch, walnut, apple, pine, hemlock, and fir trees, as well as raspberry bushes (black and red both). Animal life here includes black bears, tree squirrels, deer, skunks, foxes, bobcats, diverse beetles, honeybees, and birds (such as woodpeckers, cardinals, and thrushes).
Both halves of the Hills also abound in honeysuckle, sweetferns, mushrooms, and tawny owls. The gnomes cultivate mushroom gardens throughout the Hills region, even beyond what would naturally exist, and are collectively experts on varieties of mushrooms (e.g. which are safe to eat and which are toxic).
The forest gnomes are fond of pets. Hedgehogs, badgers, ferrets, foxes, woodpeckers, and owls are the most popular pets.
