Overall eagle-like, the akhorans have arms separate from their wings and can stand upright on their hind talons and walk like humanoids.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Akhorans are the dominant sapient race of Damaset, and are widespread throughout the southern half of the continent, called "Akhora" by foreigners.
Until their discovery by easterners, they religiously avoided the valley known as Tykin's Blood. Now, some of them have decided to break that rule in order to deal with newcomers, while others are captured and brought through Tykin's Blood against their will.

Akorans' native lingua franca is a dialect of Auran (itself a dialect of Primordial).

History

Damaset was discovered in 1487 V.Y. by an adventuresome human pirate known as Peetkali.
Unfortunately, Peetkali got deep enough in his exploration of the continent to encounter some of the more savage akhoran cultures, practicing a slave trade, and was "inspired" by the idea. He captured and brought back two akhorans to Vyt-de-Kuashon, and sold them as novelties.
Since then, relations between akhorans and Easterners have been tumultuous. Sometimes friendly, but more often not. Some akhorans have freely migrated to the Firmwold, but many more have been brought against their will and sold into slavery. The slave trade is widespread, but is mostly down the western coast of Liassang, in Rakia, and throughout the Jalut Sea.
Most akhorans in Damaset only vaguely know about the slave trade happening, and are more worried about their internal conflicts than they are about being captured by newcomers. Those akhorans that are focused on the slave trade going on take comfort in the fact that it is clearly a fad among rich Easterners; the akhorans do not make practical slaves, they believe, due to the need to keep their wings bound, and are thus destined to eventually throw off their bondage. Possibly with violence involved.

In other campaign settings, this race is known as aarakocra. Unlike some settings, this race is not native to the Plane of Air.
