Veiled Guild

The Veiled Guild was once an assassin's guild who rose to prominence during the Clan Wars.   The Veiled Guild operated more or less uninterrupted until The Collapse and many of their headquarters and safehouses were hidden inside temples to the dragonkin god of murder, Sanxyss. The Profane made sinister use of the Guild, infiltrating their ranks and setting them up to take a lot of the blame early for key leadership vacuums and bloodline severances.   The Tower Council initially came down hard on the Veiled Guild after the Song of Harmony established the laws of the land. But orcish Guildmaster Vazir Mol convinced the Council to allow the guild to continue with a new charter as an informant network serving the Tower from the shadows.   Early Councils did not trust the Veiled Guild, however, and the guild struggled under egregious oversight. Gradually they became more of an adventurers'/thieves' guild, getting by taking jobs from wealthy land-owners who coveted each other's possessions and would pay handsome sums to steal (or steal back) various artifacts and magical items. They also actively sought surviving magical artifacts, magical artisans, or texts that describe the creation of magical artifacts.   In recent years, the Veiled Guild has experienced something of a resurgence in fortunes as shifting sentiment within the Council has them relying on the Veiled Guild for their information network (sometimes called The Whispers) as originally described by Vazir Mol particularly among Unaf communities as the Council tries to stay ahead of talk of open rebellion.

Structure

Rank Prerequisites Perks Notes
Sunkissed Present a suitable offering (typically a magic item, map, or bounty from the Public Job Board). Access to public guildhalls An inductee into the Veiled Guild. "Sunkissed" is kind of a derogatory term among higher-level members (even Shaded). The most Sunkissed are allowed is access to the assignment board and one night's room and board per week at a public guildhall.
Shaded TBD Access to fences, safehouses Rank and file Veiled Guild members, Shaded have begun their training in Veilspeak, the secret language of the Veiled Guild. Shaded also are able to offload and purchase stolen goods from guild fences and find temporary lodging in various safehouses around Feodris.
Shadowbound TBD Access to skill trainers, whispernet Shadowbound are the pinnacle of Veiled achievement. They represent the trainers, guildhall leaders, and representatives for various formal meetings between the guild and Tower representatives. Shadowbound are provided regular briefings from the whispernet of informants and Shaded operating in the field. They are typically trained in a specific facility such as whisper-gathering, Council liaising, skill training, or leadership and they are so conversant in Veilspeak they often take on a peculiar accent.

Culture

The Veiled Guild is understandably very mistrustful of outsiders poking around asking questions about how to join. Typically an aspiring Sunkissed needs a sponsor to get beyond the foyer of any public guildhall, and even then it takes a pretty noteworthy offering to earn the first rank (Sunkissed).   Once on a membership path, though, inductees can advance fairly quickly through the ranks by completing various missions and assignments.

Public Agenda

Generally the Veiled Guild describe themselves as "treasure-hunters" or a euphemism like "archaeologist, tomb raider, field historian, and/or cartographer of antiquities." Their charter as far as they are willing to admit is to serve the Tower through preservation of the past and service to the people.
