Tortle
With stoic personalities to match their slow and tranquil pace, tortles are among the most spiritual of The Reaches' inhabitants. They often become monks or shamans, and live short but complete lives that they enjoy sharing with all around them. Their steadiness belies their physical strength, rivaling that of even the burliest orcs.
Innate Hermits
Large, turtle-like humanoids standing on average 5-6 feet tall, tortles are among the most peaceful of the Reach's inhabitants. With massive shells over their backs that protect them from harm, they lumber about without so much as a care in the world. One might expect them to be venerable, able to live for decades or even perhaps centuries, however they live a meager ten to twenty years, and are unfettered by their short lifespans. As mature as an adult human as they hatch, tortles do not fear death or the future, content with living today.
Tortles developed on the beaches of Morishima, a land known for being inhabited by spirits crossing into the mortal realm. They rely on the spirits for guidance, and as such have relinquished their worldly attachments. The instincts and teachings of the spirts have been instilled so constantly over countless years that tortles have evolved to know them instinctively from birth. Ever since its establishment, the court of the High Shogunate has always conscripted a hermit or sage tortle to assist with communing with the next world and ensure the spirits are content
Tortles rarely make their home willingly amongst the villages of Morishima, instead roaming from place to place. Occasionally these wandering hermits will share their sage advice with those that listen as they pass by. Tortles are seen by many as the connection between worlds, and whenever a spirit is enraged a tortle is the first to consult.
