Captain Akari (a.k.a. The Burning Phoenix, Lt. Mike Hawksard)

Captain Akari is an officer in the Feather Corps. He pilots MG-001 Crimson Hawk for the Magma Guard out of Olympus Mons. Akari earned the nickname The Burning Phoenix during the Aznable Engagement due to the appearance of his Battle Suit while fighting the Green Knight.

Physical Description

Body Features

The enhanced body provided to him by the Feather Corps is based on the genetic template of the original Featherman that piloted Crimson Hawk during the First Solar War. In addition to having superior reflexes and constitution to an ordinary human, Akari is able to moderate his input of sensory data, essentially allowing him to choose whether to feel pain or pleasure. However, this does not apply when he pilots Crimson Hawk as any tactile data is processed by the Battle Suit's computing core before being relayed to him.
In addition, Akari's body has undergone extensive surgical procedures to increase FEATHER compatibility with Crimson Hawk. He is able to maintain a baseline FEATHER interface at Stage 2 and can easily push himself to Stage 4 with relatively little physical or mental degradation in the process, though the chronic effects of the system has begun to accumulate over time.

Personal history

Though Captain Akari has been insulted a number of times for appearing "inhuman," there is a degree of truth to the statement. The Martian Institute of the Synthetic Encephalon was an organization that collapsed in 286 PTB due to bioethical concerns regarding their work. However, they achieved their goals of creating sentient, artificial life with the production of the Artificially Realized Khoziain - Reactive Effigy, or the ARK-RE. This model was capable of not only independent growth through auditory and visual input, later augmented to include all human sensory inputs, but it demonstrated authentic emotional reciprocation with human interaction.
While the program was a resounding success, the model was forsaken and discarded during the Institute's liquidation process. The Institute's research was sold to an anonymous buyer while the ARK-RE unit was buried in a chasm-like junkyard. Seventy years passed before the unit was found and reactivated by a young war orphan named Mirai. Christening the synthetic model Akari, the two bonded as scorned orphans, fighting ferociously for scraps to get by.
After years of living on the streets together, the two were taken in by the local contingent of Corpsmen. They demonstrated an inherent intuition with Battle Suit operations which led to their enlistment in the Feather Corps. Once Akari's true nature was found out, he was given an enhanced biological body with the invasive FEATHER procedure already completed. He and Mirai led Red Team as Crimson Hawk and Scarlet Falcon for three years before the Aznable Engagement where he earned his title of The Burning Phoenix.
After Mirai's death, Akari became embittered towards his new wingmen. Never making it past 200 days, pilots assigned to Scarlet Falcon either resigned or were lost in battle before the end of their first Conflict. Second Lieutenant Renho Trinidad now flies as his wingman.

Mental Trauma

Akari's primary source of trauma stems from the loss of his original Flight team during the Aznable Engagement. Following his orders, Scarlet Falcon, Rose Harrier, Maroon Kite, and Carmine Seriemas were lost in the explosion that decimated the Featherman ranks. Captain Akari holds himself completely responsible for their deaths and grew into his own bitterness and self-hate which he inadvertently directs at those surrounding him.

Motivation

While Akari is unable to identify his own wants and motivations, outside of immediate physical items, he has silently grown fond of Lieutenant Trinidad and his Mechanic Forte. He unconsciously strives for a world where orphans are allowed to hope for a better future, a promise he made to his late wingman Mirai. Forte and Trinidad serve as the surrogate proverbial orphan in his eyes as he tries to create a warless future for them.
