Oak Island, North Carolina

Points of interest

Blockade Runner Quarter's

Crossroads (motivation: to bring people, and things, together)
The motel they are staying in. Its a long-term stay kinda place, with a door that opens directly to the outside. There is a shitty little kitchen, small bathroom, and one king sized bed. In the bedside table there is a bible and a map of the area, with the location of the hotel marked with an X. On the bathroom mirror when they wake up, there is a note on the motel stationary. It reads: "Sorry about all this, but you'll need to play along for now. For your sake and mine - your performance back there was frankly embarrassing. Anyway, I'm told there's something in the area worth looking into. I think it should be right up yours (and your little friend's) alley. O.S."
The woman at the front desk is named Enid Hummel, and she is both tired and extremely stressed. She will say the room was reserved by another woman, who paid for a whole weeks worth of nights. This happened just the night before.
Also, the Mini Coocher will have about 300 more miles on it than it did before.

Mary's Gone Wild

Hub (motivation: to reveal information)
"A stop at Mary's is a must for anyone who appreciates art and the heart behind it. Ms. Mary is an artist and creator who has built a complex of little houses and art galleries out of glass bottles, window screens, mosaic, and all sorts of flotsam and jetsam. If you’re interested in the history of the area, Mary is a long-time local, and could answer any questions you may have."
The owner, creator, and operator of this little place is Ms. Mary, a middle aged woman who is partial to chunky beads and sandalwood.

Green Swamp Preserve

Den (motivation: to harbour monsters)
"Sprawling nature preserve made up of swampland, featuring Venus flytrap plants & diverse wildlife. It is famous for its carnivorous plants and magnificent orchids, and contains some of the country’s finest examples of longleaf pine savannas. It is open for visitors to hike and bask in the openness of the untamed nature."
This is where the Hag used to live. It fed on the local population quietly, never killing anyone because they knew how to handle it. It still makes its den there, and retreats there to heal.

Fort Apache

Wilds (motivation: to contain hidden things)
"A collection of film props, old cars, and other junk made into a fascinating array of constructions known as “The Town.” A curiosity made by the land’s owner, Dale Varnam, who is always ready to share a story about the items in his eclectic collection. A must-see for newbies to the area, and a beloved getaway for locals as well."

Tourism

"On the island there is a contract post office, a branch of the county library, Publix and Food Lion Supermarkets, an ABC Liquor Store, a few gas stations, numerous small professional offices/retail stores, and a large number of restaurants. Primarily a family beach type locale, the island also provides many other types of recreational activity. The Oak Island Golf Club course and its related practice facilities are open to the public and an outdoor swimming pool is available for its members' use during the summer. Two public fishing piers jut out into the Atlantic Ocean while motor/sail boats moored to piers dot the ICW as well as the Davis Canal and Montgomery Slough. South Harbour Village has a nine hole public golf course and a marina on the ICW with 1,000 linear feet of alongside dockage. All these waterways also attract a large number of kayakers. The Oak Island Recreation Center located mid-island provides both indoor and outdoor exercise facilities and rents out sports equipment and amenities like balloon tire, beach wheelchairs. Popular sporting events include the "Run Oak Island" Marathon held in February which also features a half-marathon along with a 5K and one mile run. And then in April, the Southport/Oak Island Chamber of Commerce sponsors the Oak Island Lighthouse Run which includes a half marathon, 10K, 5K and a one mile fun run. As for other activities, the town puts on an ocean front fireworks display as part of its Fourth of July festivities, and a parade down Oak Island Drive just before Christmas, while the Oak Island Library hosts a wide variety of events to include "Socrates Cafe" and "Meet the Author" programs."
