Itcthyalis, the Astral Queen

Itcthyalis is an ancient horror few know by name. She was the first of the aberrations born in the Astral Sea, and with that age came great power. She grew to a size that would eclipse most worlds in the World Tree. She came to be, like the other aberrations, from fragments of the life-giving energy of the World Tree's Weave being sent out during its growth. Once she began to grow, she greedily took as much as she could grasp, creating a hunger within that could never be sated. Without access to magic, she developed incredible psychic powers.

Planar Traveller's Nightmare

As her psionic powers grew, so did her hunger. She learned to bend the branches of the World Tree, causing individuals travelling to different Planes to wind up being brought into the presence of Itcthyalis. Stories of people going missing while travelling spread, and a caution arouse. It was believed that it was the result of something going wrong with the spell. It would be centuries before anyone learned the truth.

Mind-Shattering

After the war between the Illithid armies that invaded the Material Plane and its natives, there were scientists that wanted to learn where they came from, to be better prepared in the event they returned. Using some technology left behind, they looked into the realm, and accidently witnessed Itcthyalis. This destroyed their minds instantly. Some committed suicide immediately, but those that survived elected to worship her. They found a cult that would stay small but survive for many years to come. This was called the Order of the Unknowable.
