7th Brovian Dynasty

The noble Hyrcanan family rose to the throne of the Kingdom of Brovia just under two centuries ago as its seventh ruling dynasty. Under their leadership the continent of Vyrania, and indeed all of Eurra, has been drastically altered. From a small kingdom to an empire spanning half of the largest landmass in the world, the Hyrcanans may be considered the most influential family in recent history.

Reign of King Oswin the Founder
    Political event

Oswin (1208-1285) was an powerful noble and warrior that seized the throne of Brovia after the previous ruling family lost control in less than a century. He was ruthless in his bid to control the land and took Brovia from being a petty kingdom into a regional power.   By the time the land was relatively calm he had sat the throne for nearly two decades and, sensing that he would not last another, pushed his two sons to produce heirs of their own so that he would be assured his hard won crown would be passed to a lasting dynasty. When his first grandson was born he quickly declared his successor and, as though the alleviated stress of the future no longer weighed on his need to live, he quickly began to decline in health. Despite the unease in the realm in his last hours, he was able to pass peacefully at the age of 77.

    Reign of King Essen I
    Political event

(1244-1288) Born to a land facing upheaval, the need for approval from an overbearing father, and constant feuding with his twin brother, Essen I had a rough life that culminated in a tragically short reign. Already a man when his father took the crown of Brovia and founded its seventh dynasty, Essen was put into even more harsh competition with his brother to stand out in all ways. Both spent years at a time in the field putting down uprisings from within and defending the borders from enemies without.   When his father was nearing the end of his life, he decided that the first of his sons to have a viable heir born would be declared the official successor. This expectation was made while both were having to spend time away from court. It was luck that his wife, the Lady Evgenia, happened to become pregnant and a miracle that their first child was a son, quickly named after it's grandfather to curry even further favor.   Within a year of his child being born and his position being assured, Essen ascended the throne amid even stronger tensions with his brother. Before the two could come to a peaceful resolution a plague arrived with the spring of 1288 and killed both by the start of summer. While the eventual Oswin the Younger was mercifully spared the sickness almost all of the Hyrcanan family was taken within the same year.

Reign of King Oswin the Younger
    Political event

Named after his, at the time of his birth, still living grandfather to curry favor, Oswin the Younger was born as the tie-breaking maneuver to avoid a war of succession between his twin father and uncle. His birth was well timed as soon afterwards a virulent plague began to cross the land and within months his both his father and uncle were dead along with the majority of his extended family.   He ruled almost exactly thirty-seven years to the day from his coronation at the age of 2. To protect his health advisors of his late father held the reins of government while his claim on the throne was kept secure by loyalists until he reached his majority. Pressure was also placed on him to marry and have children as his family line was essentially exhausted of heirs. He married at age 18 and over the course of six years had three children: the Princes Oswin (III), Essen, and Tatarin.   His elder sons Oswin and Essen grew to adulthood. Tatarin died before reaching adolescence. Oswin the Younger had to deal with factionalism against his rule from within and without, even between his own sons vying for preference in succession until they had their first children. Given his age at the time of his death, many suspected foul play, though no official claims or charge was ever made.

    Reign of King Oswin III
    Political event

Oswin III ruled in similar fashion to his predecessors, trying to maintain the national standing of Brovia, still somewhat unstable from his great-grandfather's reign establishing the dynasty. He instituted a national bank that helped uplift common people into the emerging mercantile elite, drawing power away from the nobles that had hounded the powers and position of his forebears. Trade struggled to find footing until his marriage to Jacina of Darellon. The choice was made to avoid the appearance of any favoritism or elevation of any house at court and the marriage was not a happy one. However, the birth of his son Orlan seemed to make him a moderate ruler for several years.   Whether it be from pressure within court or from his own drive to expand Brovian territory, Oswin eventually made a push westward and formally declared war on Darellon despite his wife's former ties to the land. Surprisingly, he left domestic affairs under the control to his wife and advisors while he traveled to the front and ruled by courier on important issues. This lasted for two years as he led his forces directly. He was killed in battle during an ambush in the winter of 1337 as his camp traveled.

    Political event

Orlan quickly succumbs to paranoia about the security of his throne and works to undermine several policies instituted by his mother in a bid to gain popularity within the Imperial court. Also marred by meager success in series of expansionist campaigns.   His erratic personal behavior as Emperor, including the possible murder of one of his sons, caused his generals to form a coup that successfully assassinated him and raised his eldest son to the throne. He had reigned 6 years.

    Reign of Emperor Braid
    Political event

Braid was more mentally secure than his father, and had claimed to want reform within the realm, he was unable to enact decisive policies, especially on the military front. At first he decided to continue the war started by his father, only to attempt suing for peace later. When negotiations failed the war was expanded. Braid's 14 year reign became highly reactionary. While the Empire's size largely stayed the same, military settlements and outposts expanded along contested borders in the wake of a wave of nationalism. Braid died of an illness while on a tour of the Empire's western frontier near Darellon.

    Reign of Marden the Great
    Political event

Marden ended the longstanding war with the northern realms and reinvested in domestic infrastructure. The Imperium modernizes, but makes no attempts at compensating the states that will eventually join together as the Confederacy. A dissident group of Brovian citizens organized an assassination plot on the Emperor while he was traveling on his personal steam train. A bomb was planted on the tracks and detonated as his private car passed over. The armored car, a gift from the Dragonborn Emirate, saved his life. However, a secondary bomb was thrown into the midst of his surviving retinue as they prepared to flee the area.
