Imperium Ironclad
Ironclads are steam-propelled ships protected by iron or steel armor plates first innovated by the Brovian Imperium during the latter years of the 14th century of the Common Calendar.
Ironclads were designed for several roles, including as battleships, coastal defense ships, and long-range cruisers. The rapid development of warship design in the late 14th century transformed the ironclad from a wooden-hulled vessel that carried sails to supplement its steam engines into the steel-built, to the modern turreted ships we see today. This change was pushed forward by the development of advanced naval guns, more sophisticated steam engines.
The end of the Darellon Campaign by Emperor Marden and his subsequent investment in domestic advancement meant that some ironclads that had been in production were refitted and finished as trading vessels and passenger ships. Successive designs have been streamlined and produced in modular styles.
Almost the entirety of the Imperium Navy has been refitted or made new as ironclads.
Advances in metallurgy have led to the soon large scale steel shipbuilding will be possible.
Navel Designation
The most common designation for these ships is INS, "Imperium Navy Ship".
It is also possible to see non-military ironclads owned by the state and private organizations designated officially as ICV, "Imperium Commercial Vessels".
